ryguy,

How has your experience been with CX? Do you have any general advice for young bucks such as myself? What are your thoughts on living in HK? I have visited the city, and my wife is on board if I were to get hired. Thanks in advance.

I would send a PM, but I don't have the privileges yet.

Default Anchorage

What's the word on ANC as a domicile? Popular or dog? What's it take to get there? Just puttin' out the feelers...

Hello anyone -
Cathay's career website says minimum of 1000tt to apply as DESO. What is reality these days? What is competitive? What (if anything) can a career changer that barely has their minimums do to earn an interview?
Thanks

If you speak to the ladies in HKG, they'll tell you 3000TT and 1000 Turbine are the mins for DESO.

In the past they've had 737 Captains from Europe go for SO slots as well as the infamous case of an EK Captain who joined CX as an SO.

Wow, just as I feared. They should reflect that on their career page so newbies like me don't get their hopes up when they say that their mins are 1000 tt. If it sounds too good to be true, it is. I guess the word gullible isn't in the dictionary either...
BTW, I don't know the "infamous case of an EK Captain who joined CX as an SO." Please fill me in or tell me where to find the story. Thanks.

Hi NB,

I think I replied to your email after you posted this one. As for the rest, Hong Kong is nice but has a lot of pollution in the winter. If you don't mind apartment living in a large city then it would be great. There are houses but not really what you are used to. To me though, I would want the city experience if I were to move there. I've got too much going on here at home to move to HKG right now.

It is no different than other Majors that publish mins between 1000-1500tt. The one thing you will learn is published mins and competitive mins are very different things. Not too many airlines are going to let someone with 1000 hours sit at the controls of a 747 across the Pacific. I paid almost 10 years worth of dues to get here. The exception of course is the cadets. They get in with very very little time but it is just something that the company has to do in that area of the world to operate there. The good news is, the cadet program is open to Hong Kong ID card holders and not just permanent residents anymore. The only way to get around paying dues is to be related to someone in high places, for some that works well.

Yes, that makes complete sense. Yet my understanding of the DESO program is that the SO is hired to babysit the flight director somewhere over the Pacific while the captain and FO relax to avoid exceeding duty times. The SO gets NO takeoffs or landings, and no real control of the aircraft (but is still expected to be an ace in the sim).
CX does their initial training in Adelaide, Australia, right? Is the cadet training contracted out to a flight school there, or is it run directly by a Cathay subsidiary?
