ANA JP Express or Air Japan??
#971
I had an interview scheduled with ANA in 2008. Prior to the interview, I learned that the Japanese medical folks will not certify anyone who has had lasik. Parc ultimately confirmed this. 4 years on, this may have changed. Good luck

Somewhere in this massive thread was the medical requirements... I will try and find it later. The eye portion was very specific, and I plan to print it and take it to an optometrist or ophthalmologist this summer when I am back in the US and see if I am good to go. I remember when reading through it the first time I was kinda nervous...
I haven't had any surgurys, however I do wear contacts.

In a document I found dated April 2007. CIVIL AVIATION BUREAU
MINISTRY OF LAND, INFRASTRUCTURE AND TRANSPORT.
JAPAN AEROMEDICAL RESEARCH CENTER
http://www.aeromedical.or.jp/documents/ManualforAME.pdf
2. Disqualifying Conditions
2-1 Conditions that do not meet the above criteria
2-2 Correction with orthokeratology (correction of refraction using contact lenses) **READ APC POST 974**
2-3 History of refractive surgery
Would be nice if this rule has changed since 2007.

Follow-up...
3-6 The contact lenses are acceptable as corrective spectacles. The applicant who wears contact lenses should meet the distant visual requirements with the contact lenses. When the applicant wears contact lenses for the first time, an adaptation period of one month or more should be required.
3-7 The refractive index of corrective spectacles worn while performing airman duties should be calculated by equivalent spherical diopter. If the applicant wears contact lenses, the refraction index of the spare set of spectacles is acceptable.
4. Evaluation Precautions
With regard to an applicant with a history of orthokeratology or refractive surgery, see “9. OPHTHALMOLOGY, 9-1 Extraocular Region or Ocular Adnexa.”
5. Notes
If the applicant needs to wear corrective glasses while performing airman duties, he/she must meet the criteria for both intermediate and near visual acuity while wearing the glasses. Bifocal contact lenses must not be used. Also, colored contact lenses should not be used.

Somewhere on line I did read they can award a waiver for LASIK for a Japan Class I flight medical. It gave a full page of parameters you must meet and a doctor must fill out the form.

Being discussed in length at the cargo forum (due to its similarity to the FDX crash) and it was a flight operated by mainline, not Air Japan

Thinking about applying
I'm currently at a US regional, 2500 total and 1200-ish jet sic. I know they are advertising 3000 total and minimum 1000 multicrew jet. I've only got the SIC rating on my license. And it's only a commercial, although the company is gonna have to give me an ATP and a type by next August. Also hold an ICAO JAA ATPL license. Should I wait till I reach the mins and get the type, or just send my stuff in now?
