I did the medical in NY. You are flown in the day before and put up in a pretty nice hotel. I believe that you have to pay for it, but will be reimbursed quickly upon submitting your receipts.

Your first day starts off at a hospital where you do your EKG / stress test plus the EEG (brain scan). This is all done before noon and you are done for the rest of the day.

The second day you go to the medical clinic at the airport where you go through the rest of the screening. Blood test, urine test, lung capacity test, MMPI, eye test, hearing test, and meet with the psychologist and psychiatrist. They are relatively quick from what I remember.

Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.

"IROs are not required until more than 12 hours. Our return from HNL is normally 9.5 hours with only a 2 man crew. We also do a CAN turn which can be more than 9 hours with only a 2 man crew.... None of our flights require IROs."

Thanks for the clarification, I had heard something to that effect but wasn't sure about the numbers.

Just to help answer the airfare and hotel cost...CREW pays for your airfare and hotel for the interview. Only thing out of your pocket is the bus/train fare to Haneda for the interview - and they will reimburse you fairly quickly. I tried to get reimbursed for a night out at Roppongi after the interview, but they said NO.

Lost in Asia: Thanks for the info. I am looking forward to the interview.

Cloud Sailer: About four weeks from submitting app to getting call for interview. I was originally called just before Christmas to go on the 9th, but couldn't go, reschedule took about 2.5 weeks.

Went through CReW for family medical.

I understand that for the interview it is basically 95% sim evaluation and 5% technical interview. As for the medical... one either fits their standards or doesn't.

Even taking into account how little they weigh the panel interview I would still like to show up over-prepared.

Any tips you can add for the panel interview?

-Be familiar with Japanese culture/customs
-Learn as much as possible about the company/area/contract
-Gleim ATP
-Definition of V1, V2, VR...

As always, thanks for the help.

No to Japanese customs, Learn a little about the company, know a lot about why you want to work there, know the ATP written, if your company is cat 2-3 know the requirements, know runway markings and lights, RVSM, TO alternates, most recent aircraft or those you are typed in, @ cat 1 minimums how far are you off the G.S. or LOC if you are 1 dot off, cold WX ops, after v1 but before vr you get a tailwind shear, what are you going to do? Balanced field length. Typical oral if you are hot at some point you are going to have to get a question wrong or they will keep asking you harder and harder questions.

Have the sim down in your sleep. Have all the call outs down. They want to know who is in command. Some people say know the N1's but I've never done that and just use my flight instruments to determine what power I needed. If you are making large power adjustments then you are doing something wrong. Concentrate on your call outs and flying.

Overall extremely kind people and an enjoyable experience.
FWIW 7000tt, 4000 JET, 1500 PIC, B737 type. Waiting on the medical.

I would highly suggest looking over basic Japanese customs. After all, you are coming to Japan to work for a Japanese airline.

Thanks for the input guys, really appreciate it. Keep it coming if you think of anything else.

About the customs, I'll make sure to have a basic understanding. For example, I just learned that blowing one's nose in public, even with a nice tissue... is not quite acceptable, isn't that right?

I actually found the ANA Company web site to be quite helpful with tips on basics for Japanese culture.. (Accepting business cards for example)
anaskyweb.com

Re. BKK Layovers: On the cargo side, we have daily layovers. 6 weekly are 24 hours, and there is one trip that is 48 hours over the weekend.. Not bad as we of course stay in a nice downtown hotel!
