The Japanese do not like to overload you. During our sim sessions, we rarely had 2 days in a row. You will be in the sim one day, off the next. You have plenty of time to study.
When you start, you will have one week studying for the Air Law exam. Next you will do a week of radio law and theory. Next will be a week studying CRM, weather, ops manual, etc. Then you will go into CBTs which will last about a month. Following that will be Fixed Base Simulator A where you learn normal procedures in a non-motion simulator for about 5 sessions. Fixed Base B is next where you run abnormal procedures. Again about 5 lessons Then Full Flight Sim in preparation for the type ride. If I remember right, that is about 17 session. After your type ride, another 7 or so sessions for your ATPL ride. Go home for a while then about a month or so of OJT for FOs.
You are given a lot of time off and you should not be overloaded. It could be done a lot faster but that is the way they do it here.

Your experience may vary but I did my ATPL ride on the 5th, medical exam the next day and then headed home on the 8th. My first day of OJT was the 1st of the next month. You are given a confirmed ticket home and on return for OJT. After that, commuting becomes your responsibility.

I'm going to Tokyo next week for the F/O eval. It says in the Sim guidance that F/O candidates can do the evaluation in either seat. For those previous F/O candidates out there, which seat did you use and why? Do you recommend sitting in one seat over another? Also on the tech questions written, were the questions multi-choice or fill in. Thanks for the responses.

I took the left seat since I have been flying on that side for the last 3.5 years. Whatever makes you comfortable I suppose. They could care less.
Can't tell you about the written exam since I interviewed about 6 months ago. It was not part of the screening back then.
BTW, do these guys keep a "pool" of successful applicants? The reason I'm asking is I have not heard a single word from HACS since my interview. They did tell me I passed the interview/sim right after and to continue on to the medical. But, have not heard anything since. It's been over 6 months. I emailed HACS to inquire but received no replies. Anyone on the same boat? What the dealie yo?

Give them a call to see what is happening, it seems to me like six months is too much time and it could be some paperwork missing that has stopped your process and with the amount of applicants lately it could very well have fallen thru the cracks. Get on the horn and bug them

hey all, just got back from Tokyo today, received an offer pending the medical results. all the gouge is right on, thanks for posting it! would like to get in touch with some others in the same position, planning class in march - pm me. also, i would like to talk to some guys who recently started class, just like to get an idea what happens next and when - also trying to gather all the info to decide between AJV vs. AJX.
good luck to all who head out for the interview, quite an experience!
btw, would be a good idea to study V1 VR & V2 and their relationship to eachother, balanced field length, and the relationship between Vref and stall speed - just a suggestion!

Depends in what you want really, at AJX the only place we fly in the states is HNL and the AJV guys get to go to ORD. With the recent salary raises the money for the F/O's is pretty much the same at both companies, we do fly a LOT more at AJX (70 to 80 hours) than AJV (40 to 50 hours) Both are offering upgrades within the first contract. Both companies have a pretty cool pilot group and we actually hang out together quite a bit. You can PM me or "Lost In Asia" for AJX perspective and "777 birdcage" for an AJV perspective. I wish you luck
