I have been invited to the sim screening in June with CREW. Very excited and thank you everyone for all the good information. Is the sim screening that crew does the same profile as the interview sim ride in Japan?

This is something that has been implemented lately but as I understand it, it is the same profile...! Good luck

I did the pre-screen with CREW last year. The profile you would do in Japan will be the same as the pre-screen plus a V1 cut and single engine ILS. Unless CREW has changed things, there was no single engine stuff on the pre-screen. Just know the profiles and pitch/thrust settings cold and communicate with the PM (pilot monitoring).

Last I heard from an HR guy here, they want 48 new hires this year. They are conducting interviews every week, and I think we just had a new class start today. Good luck!!

Any ideas on if/when Japan will allow PRK eye surgery? Seems they are about the only country left in the dark ages when it comes to this kind of surgery. Even China is now allowing it (yes, I am sure - I have a Chinese first class medical and am currently working in China). I would love the opportunity to work in Japan, but this is the only thing holding me back.

PS- Even NASA allows it for astronauts - http://astronauts.nasa.gov/content/faq.htm
"As of September 2007, the refractive surgical procedures of the eye, PRK and LASIK, are now allowed, providing at least 1 year has passed since the date of the procedure with no permanent adverse after effects. For those applicants under final consideration, an operative report on the surgical procedure will be requested."

Seems a bit ridiculous that I can fly into space, but according to Japan I am not fit to be an airline pilot.

The JCAB (as many other ICAO members) does have an exemption for these kind of eye surgery, but for what I understand it has to be the company that sponsor you for this exemption and currently they don't do that (or I haven't heard of any case rather) as to when they will start requesting the exemptions from JCAB? I have no idea...., one thing that I have learned on my years here, they work at their own pace and they don't care what anyone else approves or doesn't approve..!

That's their playing field and that's their rules. Either you conform to their rules or you don't be a part of the team. I know that it's ridiculous but so is the strict BMI rule. You can't join Air Japan with BMI of 28 and over but you can join the United States Army (after analysis of body fat ratio).

Their way is traditional way of doing things and following the rule book word for word!

I certainly understand that it is their rules and their playing field. It just seems odd to me that a country that seems to be so obsessed with technological advances would be one of the few countries stuck in the dark ages when it comes to aviation medicine. Every contract agency I have contacted about working in Japan all say PRK is a definite no-go item.

If you ever get the chance to go to Japan and deal with all the red tape it will make perfect sense. Watch Mr. Baseball, that will explain a lot.

Does Japan have more red tape than China? China is pretty bad. Been a while since I watched 'Mr Baseball', perhaps I need to watch it again.

They don't care what they do in China nor the Orion belt....! What we call red tape, it's just the way they do things... and you can bring Sanjay Gupta to argue your case and they will just smile and nod politely but in reality not even listening to your arguments because they just cannot go beyond amazement at the fact that you are even arguing against "procedure" in the first place.
