As long as it is a multi crew aircraft and the hours you accrued on it were on an aircraft registered in the country of the licence that you are converting. ie; FAA licence to convert . . . Bandit time had to be in an N registered aircraft.

Check the CAA to make sure, but I'm pretty confident that the Bandit qualifies.

Hi Guys

I am new to this forum and pretty happy to find this thread with all the great info. Hope I can join you.

I am also a US pilot married to a Kiwi hoping to move to NZ. We have talked about this for a few years but made the decision a couple of months ago to push ahead.

I have my ATPL and the requisite PIC hours so it looks like I just need to do the Air Law exam if I am trying with Air NZ??

Had planned to wait until after I had applied and hopefully had an interview before applying for residency but looks like I will need to push ahead as soon as poss. to even have a chance of being considered. Main concern is if the residency visa is only valid for 12mths what if the ANZ process takes longer and it expires?

A couple of questions Tweet and Aloha might be able to help with - how did you go about sitting the Air Law exam in the US? Was it arranged through ASL in NZ?. Should I have this done before sending in my applic. to ANZ? Also what materials did you use? I saw the sample papers on the ASL site and Pilot Books recommended a bunch of stuff - is there anything more concise/user friendly?

Koru - you have great info. Just wondering if it would be realistic to commute from ChCh - a little worried after hearing about the lack of flight benefits - can you jumpseat?

Last Q (for now anyway) - I have a contact thru my wife's uncle. He has asked to see my CV. Did any of you send a resume / CV? Just thinking the NZ style might be different from the 1 page US one I have - any thoughts?

Cheers for now

Hi Lucky,

Good deal. An answer to a few of your questions. First off I'm not sure Air NZ will even interview without the PR. Once through through process the PR will be good indefintely once you enter the counttry. It is good for 2 years if you leave the country. Once the PR is approved, you just need to enter the country within a year to activate it. You will be given a returning resident visa (stamped in your passport) that allows you to leave the country for 2 years at a time. Get on the PR process ASAP, they advertise a year long process but I got it done in 6 months. Also be prepared to pay a little over a grand.

As far as the exams, I have not sat any yet but I have had my logbook validated by ASL. Because they will not count my military time on my ATP I will have to sit 5 of the 7 exams unless I can get the required time now that I'm retired. I did work through ASL for approval to take the exams here. None of that is cheap either. You will need to have the exam complete and ASL crediting you before AirNZ will interview.

It also wouldn't hurt to knock out your NZ class 1 medical. The only doc in the US approved to do it is in Phoenix. Lot's of paperwork involved.

Koru will give a better answer but a commute from Christchurch should be workable if you are on long haul. But you will have to get yourself to Auckland. You will have to pay but I believe there is some sort of staff travel price.

It sounds like you would have a great chance for an interview once you get your squares filled.

Once you have the required posts feel free to PM me if you have any further q's

BTW where are you based, where is your wife from?

Cheers,
Tweet

Thanks Tweet for the quick reply.

Sounds good for the PR - didn't want it to expire when a grand is involved. My wife is working on the applic. now - how long did it take for your FBI/Police clearance?

Hope you can work it not to have to take the 5 exams. Looks like I should move ahead with the ASL assessment so I don't have any surprises. Do you think I can submit my applic before sitting the Air Law and getting my PR (knowing I wouldn't have a chance at an interview until they came through) - or should I wait to submit it all together?

One Q on the NZ Medical - how long is that valid for?

I am based in Salt Lake City but I'm originally from the Mid-West. My wife is a "Mainlander" like yours. She is from Christchurch but has been away from NZ for 15 years. Family is part of the reason for looking at Christchurch but I also love the South Island - great fishing, hunting, boating etc

love those Kiwi beers too!

Lucky,

Hey, we flew together a last year. I sent you a message via SWOL. Did you get that? I tried to send you a PM on here but you have that turned off.

I was just ChCh a couple of weeks ago. The guys who live there say they spend about 3,000 a year on going back and forth. They say the process is easy. I can't stomach it since we have such good Jumpseat agreements here but that is the way it is. -C

Hey Lucky,

My FBI clearance was back in about 2 weeks. I asked for them to rush it they turned it around quickly. I was pleasantly suprised.
I did submit my application right away before having anything complete. I have been able to meet with the folks at AirNZ in person a couple of times now and I believe that has certainly helped me. As far as the NZ medical I beleive it is good for 6 months. I don't have it with me at the moment so I can't confirm that. I mainly did it prior to my last trip down. I wanted some more information to update in my application folder and I also wanted to show/prove my interest. I also figured that once I am on file with the CAA it will be easy to get current when the time comes then start from scratch.

I love Christchurch, it is a beautiful city. My wife is from In'gill in the deep South so I have a well developed taste for Speights!! You are right, gotta love that Kiwi brew! Have you had the chance to sample some of the world class fly fishing or hunting. I have fished every trip down and cannot get enough. Always looking forward to the next trip.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Cheers for now,

It's every six months for over forty. I'm under forty so I do my medical once a year.

Had a chat with another one of their guy's, he's on the B733, and he figured that there were currently 80 people on yes letters. Generally speaking as of late the company has not been getting everybody who was on a yes letter, hence (so I hear) the large number.

The lad also mentioned a rumour that I heard a while back from a reasonably good source, and that is that they are seriously looking at 6 NG's. We'll see if that one pans out, but the way they are talking it makes sense.

Now, if they can just get some people to retire you guy's will be in like flint.

Pac Blue is still quite desperate by the by, have you thought about that anymore Tweet? A few guy's who were sitting on yes letters and went to Pac Blue have come over to Air NZ, so it's no hindrance, it gets you in the country and you don't need full residence; just the work visa.

Just a thought. . .

I talked with a few Pac Blue guys while I was down there. Specifically, Geoff Lowe, who is on the hiring committee. He indicated that they are requiring a PR as well to get on. The amazing thing that I found to be a turn off was their work rules. He asked me why I want to move and I told him lifestyle and that I love being outdoors and NZ was perfect. He then asked me how many days off a month I get and told me that through a combination of days on and reserve days Pac Blue guys only get nine days off a month. Not only that but he also said that they only work between 60-70hr a month. I didn't get how you could work so much and not fly that much. It sounds like a lot of time away from base. I'm with you Tweet, I want to hold out.

I got an email yesterday from a friend who forwarded my a page from the National Party's website regarding immigration. It sounds as though, if they win the election, they may liberalize it even more. Who knows.
