Oh, and the All Blacks are having a pre WC test against the Frenchies pretty soon in AKL; should be a rippa (as they say).

I could use some more people whom I understand (I'm going to get in trouble for that one).

Wow, that's not something I was aware of at all! I figure that with my break in flying though, I should get it just to have some current time under my belt, even if it is civilian. I have over 3000 hours military time. Flying into a lot of really cool places with the C-21 (LAX, Logan, Quito, tegucigalpa, Kodiak, Sondestromfjord, etc, etc, etc, and then all over the world in the KC-135 as well).

My accent tends to be like a chameleon. And I did learn English from the UK, so I do tend to revert to a strange mish mosh of slang/accents. I usually refer to myself as an inhabitant of the 3rd rock from Sol.

P.S. Kick the froggies in the butt!

Tegucigalpa. . .cool. Just bring a nice shot of you on final and they should hire you on the spot.

There is a deep military history at Air NZ so they do look after you guys, and they understand that it can be tough to get the ATPL while in the military. They do the ATPL ride on one of your regular sim hops when you meet the requirements. As an aside, you might want to look at converting straight to an Aussie, then over to the Kiwi with the trans Tasman agreement. Not sure about Oz, but it might be easier for the military guy's licence wise.

P.S. They intend to!

Hi Koru, Got the T-Shirt at Tegucigalpa myself. LOL

I got an e-mail from Margie this morning answering a few of my questions. She did mention that ANZ will require me to convert over to the ATPL. But she was also under the impression that all I will have to do is sit the Air-Law Exam. I will have to break the bad news to her of the ASL ruling on what will be required of me to convert. She seems like a very nice lady who is very approachable with questions.

Okay now for a logbook question...I have a true logbook for my civilian time...about 500 hours of GA time. My military time is all on military records only. Unfortunatley it is only by totals (individual aircraft and overall totals)not individual flights. Do you believe this will this be a hinderence?

Lastly the dates are set!!! Unless of course the baby decides to show early. Right now I will be heading down 31 May on NZ Flt 5 and departing 24 June on NZ Flt 2. I will actually be in Auckland by midday on Friday the 22 of June to hopefully meet Margie and turn in my application and medical information. I will be around Sat and Sunday as well. If you are around during that time I would love to meet you and buy you a beer. And if you have the time I would appreciate and introduction to Margie.

Cheers,
JD

The last round of hiring we had guy's from the military who did not have an ATPL. They either had the requesite time and did the ATPL ride along with their initial type on an Air NZ bird, or they did not have the time and did the ride down the road. So it really didn't matter. You'll need to be able to get an ATPL at some point, but it shouldn't take much more then 16-18 months to get the 1000 hours FO. Perhaps that is what Margy is talking about.

As far as your military time I don't know. I flew with a chap the other night who was in the US Airforce for a spell on exchange. I assume he had the same deal. As they want to see your military record at the interview stage, along with your log book, it might be not that big a problem.

So can I assume that you have applied? If not do it today (remember the six months). And get that PR visa. And check your PM's.

Default QOL in AKL on 1st year FO pay

Koru,

What kind of QOL could someone expect on first year FO pay? The housing market around Auckland is expensive when compared to several US cities. I've heard average NZ salary is around 35K, but with housing prices so high that doesn't seem right.

Additionally, how well do you think a yank would be received both at the company and around town. I'm not talking the ugly American type that wears a cowboy hat, big belt buckle, and tight "made in the USA" t-shirt. But respectful and more than willing to adapt to local customs.

Cheers,

Hey Propfails,

Koru will give you some good answers. He is the man!!!! With his help I have a "Meet and Greet" set up for next month.
In my experience Kiwis are a very accepting group. Especially if you act liked you mentioned, respectful and willing to adapt. Koru will give you more detail about his experience there. In short he really enjoys the folks he works with.

As far as pay goes... 1st year pay is 70K NZ which at todays rate equals approx 51K US. You are right the cost of living is much higher in and around Auckland but the further you get away the better it is. My plan should I be lucky enough to get hired is to live on the South Island near my wifes family and commute. Cost of living is much more reasonable down there compared to Auckland area.

Cheers,
JD

BTW...Saw you are a Navy guy...I used to fly in VT-31 and was on the CNATRA staff for awhile. Best tour this AF guy had!!

Howdy Propfails,

Yea, Twet has the right idea I think. We bought property here in 2002 when we decided to move here from Canada. At the time it was pretty reasonable, I'd been working a US dollar contract and we got almost 2 to 1, and you could buy and move a 100 year old villa for $75K NZ. Now, a bungalow south of Auckland with a postage stamp yard is over $600K new, and maybe in te mid 300's for an older one.

Many of our long haul pilots commute, some as far as the Gold Cost in Australia, so that should give you and idea of the ease of scheduluing. ome months are better than others mind you.

I think Americans, and Canadians are accepted pretty well down here. You're gonna get a little bit of the 'oh those Americans' anywhere, but I just counter with 'would you rather the company bought the A333/340 line? I didn't think so, so shut up.' Works OK. Seriously though, they are great people and very, very easy to get along with. We have some of the best culture and CRM I have ever experienced.

Many of our pilots, including those on the hiring comittee, are ex airforce and some did stints with you guys. The C130 thing is pretty much the secret hand shake as far as I can work out. So they tend to like that.

All this said, both Tweet and I had a head start with being married to Kiwis. How you get into the country is your deal, but we are getting way down the list for qualified people in the near future.

I'll PM some more details. Some things are better said in private.
