Any reason why you wouldn't want to fly for fun?

Good luck.

T,

Don't get it twisted sir. I didn't name a price. I can't speak on behalf of those that operate currently. Do I think $20K annual is par? Nope, do I make more than that now, yes. Could I survive the first year? Yes, I'm smart with my money...my blood is on my money...worked hard for it.

I read a post in here about supply and demand. That's a two fold product.

When the jobs are plenty and pilots are few, then pay is great!
When pilots are plenty and jobs are few, then pay sucks!

Why do we put a price on "LOVE"? A mechanic (me) get's dirty and fixes things because he's good at it / loves it. Is the dirt worth the pay? No! The satisfaction of the accomplishment is.

From looking at the salaries of Wide body, to corp pilots it ranges from $30 to $229pr hr. Now that including the years in. So after the first year, QoL should go up...

Consider the $20K annual pay the BS filter, if you can't hack the first year pay, quit! If you stay...then they give you better wages. No everyone starts a job from day 1 with $200K+/- per year, except Bill Gates.

I do fly for fun! I take pictures for fun, I have sex for fun...But could I make good money doing all of the above, yes! It's just how you look at it I guess.

With the hard work and sacrafices that are put into the learning and gaining of flt hrs, why shouldn't it pay you? Pay you good.

But you're right, that seems to be a touchy subject on here. We're going to the right of course...let's get back to the correct heading.

Would ATP be a bad choice? Is it worth the price, even if I didn't want to fly the bus in the sky...just to be a cargo dawg or corp suit? Hell, who knows, might start my own airline...in China, why not, everyone else is making money outside the US. (Sorry, that was a rant)

Thanks for the imput!

Biglewi1 -

Are you aware of the search function on APC?
I can not even begin to count the number of threads already devoted to this topic with 100s of responses where I could practically substitute your name in place of whomever started the 100s of other threads.

You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders, though need to be educated more on the airline business and the hurtles associated with the climb along with finding out if ATP is the place for you to train.

Spend some time reviewing the numerous threads already devoted to your present question. This will provide you with some important background information, give you some insight to the tone of some of the responses already received, and give you a rudder steer to more detailed questions in the future.

Good luck.

Sir, yes I was aware. That issue was not addressed at the beginning, my apologies. It seems that most if not all skirt the question. The "Woe is me", bash the cookie cutter school gripe.
I get it. I'm new to the industry. Again the reason I'm here, bestowing MUCH ADMIRATION and RESPECT to those before me.

I'll heed your advice and read. I'll be back more educated to ask the "right" questions.

Thanks Marine!

Aim High,
Lew

GE,

Thanks for the info! I'm going to finish to my retirement in the military, as stated before. I will continue to plug away at flying, gaining new certifications, hrs, and experience. Once I'm out of the DOD, I will pursue what is open to flying...banners, divers, corporation, regional’s, and cargo...whatever.

What is life without struggle? It's not the falling that matters; it's how we get up and recover. I've been to some really horrid places on this planet with the time I've been in. I’ve dealt with some hard times in my life. That is a fact, nothing new there!

It's time now that I enjoy it. I really appreciate everyone’s comments, from the positive to the negative. Thanks for what you guys/gals do, have done and still are doing (putting up with) today! Without you all, I could never be where I am today! Nor, be who I am today.

You've taken me into battle, into vacation; you've taken me home to see my family after battle. You've even taken me home to see my grandparents, who raised me, for the last time at their double funeral.

MOST OF ALL: YOU’VE INSPIRED ME!

Hat's off to you guys, the weather you endure to ensure "We're on time"!
Hat's off!

Now, it's my turn...I would love to return the favor or pay it forward!

AIM HIGH!

I recommend training close to where you live, or where you will be living when your done with the army. If you are sharp and can really study, where you train is no big deal.

67C,

Thanks for your advice. My family and my wife's are from the Florida area...so that will work for us, the JAX area or Craig.

Atp has a center in jax, but there are lots of options in Florida so I would look around first. If your goal is the airlines, go with ATP because you will get end with more multi time likely then any other flight school.

Also just wondering how that gi bill works. I know you mentioned you have a degree, but to my little knowledge of the gi bill, I have been told you can get 100 percent of your training paid for if you are training at a college owned flight school.

You know, since the post 911 bill change...it's hard to tell what they're going to pay. I've contacted them in regards to your question.

I know that anything after my PPL, they'll pay 60%. However, one thing that is turning me off to ATP is the fact that they stopped accepting the GI Bill.

I'll do a little research and get that answer back to you and others that are interested.

Several of my former classmates were vets, and the guys that were getting a degree (2 year) while flight training were getting 100 percent funding from their gi bill. I thing it is called post 911 chapter 33 gi bill. There were also guys that were not getting a degree but still getting a portion funded by the gi bill. It might seem pointless to waist time getting another degree if you already have one, but most schools will count up 50 percent of you credits towards a degree.
