Help transitioning restricted airspace
#11
You must establish comms prior to entering the airspace, although they prefer to talk to you 20NM out (which is not yet class C).

Call me crazy, but even with a Pvt RW rating, you haven't gotten flight following before or talked with approach controllers around Class-C's?????
If this is true, I would advise you to go out and while you're building time etc.... Just go do it when you have minimal "other" distractions so you can get a feel for it.
Also, there's the Listen to Live ATC (Air Traffic Control) Communications | LiveATC.net. Just browse and find a facility to listen to. It's streaming audio from people that link in their scanners to this website, it's definately cool! Listen to how things are phrased etc... Hopefully it'll help in short notice.
SNA's link is down at the current moment it appears
Airport Detail: KSNA | LiveATC.net

KSNA is Class C. As long as you establish radio communications (they respond with your callsign) you can enter their airspace. You only need specific clearance into B.

And if they do hand me off to the tower, I'm assuming they'll say something like "N#### contact John Wayne tower on ###" at which point I'd acknowledge, switch over (make the initial call). But then do I state my transition intentions to John Wayne tower, or do they already know what I'm doing because I was on flight following and that information is handed over as well? I'm just trying to get a handle on what's going on behind the scenes so I don't sound like a complete idiot

Well, my question was more specific as to how that conversation would go if I were doing flight following. If I'm on with a center, are they going to hand me over to the tower when I am approaching the class C or are they going to clear me through that class C without talking to the tower?

Fright Following
I'd recommend it. It's always comforting to have another set of eyes looking out for you, plus if the excrement hits the fan, you have someone to talk to immediately and they know who and where you are.
If you don't get FF, or the facility is unable, write down all of the freqs and have them handy in case you need to talk to someone and you won't have to scour charts. You also might want to monitor those freqs as you go - you might be the traffic someone on FF or an IFR plan is being told to look out for.
Just my .02
have fun!

I've got one more message regarding flight following - let's say I'm on flight following from John Wayne class charlie to Ontario class charlie. Do I need to request a frequency change to listen to Ontario's ATIS and then come back to FF, or do they terminate FF before I reach the class charlie airspace so I have time to listen to ATIS, or do I have to cancel FF so I have time to listen to ATIS and then I make the call to the tower? I seems like in all of my reading, you just stay on with FF and they guide you to the airport, but there is no mention about ATIS...
thanks!

You'll want the ATIS before talking to the controller of the destination airspace. Just let JW FF folks you'll be leaving the freq to pick up ATIS. They will either say, sure just be back in x minutes, or wait due to possible conflicting traffic.
