Default Schooling for Aviation

Hey guys, just a question for the aviation professionals here. My entire goal in life has been to get into aviation, my father flew for Birgenair, THY, and Royal Air Maroc and Air France at different points in his career, and I've wanted to follow in his footsteps, despite his objections. My first choice was ENAC but ever since I became an American citizen, I lost the ability to change my secondary citizenship from Turkish to French or Romanian, so that's out of the question.

At this point I plan on going the military route through ERAU's AFROTC program and get a degree in Aerospace Engineering there, or go to another school, get a degree in Economics and follow the AFROTC route. I don't plan on going to ERAU for flight school because of the cost as I would be footing the bill and because with a degree in Aeronautical Science from ERAU, I could only fly and with the state of the industry, I don't believe that that is a solid position to be in. Economics being my second great interest allows presents a good course of action I believe.

The question I have is what do you professionals believe is the best way to step forward. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated, also I'm a sophomore in High School if this helps at all.

Do yourself a big favor. Listen to your father. He has lived the life. This career provides a very difficult and unstable lifestyle, often with very low wages.....

Since your so young, why make a life changing decision now? Get some experience and then form your own opinion. Do this by getting your private pilot certificate. Then step back and form your own opinion thus far. If you like it, continue on with your instrument, and so on. This way you are easing yourself into it. If you are unsure and eventually want to go into economics or some other field, then you can do so. If that is the case, then the money you spent on the flight training is not wasted... it gave you experience, knowledge, and you got to do something that you enjoyed and that not many people get to do.

I agree with the above posters. Get your PPL and see how you like it...Good luck. You are very fortunate to have a great role model and a mentor. Do listen to your dad!
