Pilot training choices in New Zealand
Hey,
I got a few questions about becoming a pilot.
I'm 18 right now and I've been wanting to become a pilot for as long as I can remember.
I'm in the last year of College in New Zealand now, so I have to decide what I'm going to be studying next year.
My choices are between going to Massey University and studying the Bachelor of Aviation, or going to the New Zealand Air force.
The only reason I'm considering the air force is because I will have no student loan once I've finished the training, but I will have a compulsory 10 years of service, after my 2 years of training.
I also won't have a bachelor, which I've read it very useful when trying to get a job in a major airline.
I was curious what the pilots on this forum think about these two choices? They both seem to have there pros and cons.
Also, has anyone gone through Massey university and done the Bachelor in Aviation?
Any information would be really useful.
Thanks, Rod

Hi Rod here is my $.02...
Go To school and get your degree...something you can fall back on if the flying jobs don't pan out. I am somewhat familiar with Air NZ's hiring requirements and yes are very correct, a degree is a must have if you eventually want to get on with them. Now I am also partial to getting the military training...that's the road I took in the US (20 year USAF retiree).
What I would think very hard about doing if I were in your shoes would be to get my degree first then go the military route. I can contact a friend who used to be an instructor in both US Navy and RNZAF. He may be able to offer up some good insight...
In the meantime get your post count up then PM me...I think you need 10-maybe 20 posts before you can PM.
Cheers For Now,
