Hand Held GPS???

I still keep a sectional map on my lap with my finger pointed to the spot where I'm at as my primary navigational aid. I just use the GPS as a backup moving map. Not familiar with all the fancy functions yet. If there's an airport nearby, I already know without relying on the GPS.

Well you buy regular updates from Garmin, but no, I don't think there is any way for a 296 or a 295 to show actual airport diagrams like a 496.

well what I mean isn't the airport diagram but the actual airport directory. I hear the 496 has more private strip information and the like, moreso than the 296. so say there are 20,000 airports on the 496, only say 15,000 show on the 296 because of private airparks and whatnot.
I was wondering if you could upgrade that database on the 296 or if it's just part of the package... the 296 sounds so good for what I need, I just don't want to one day land on a road on an engine out to later find out there's a private strip 3 miles away I could've made. that's all.
but yeah I agree, paper map 1st, GPS second.

Well you do get what you pay for. I've had a chance to fiddle around a bit with a 496 on the ground and it is nice, but it costs alot more than a used 295 or 296. I fly through a club and the plane we have doesn't have a GPS in it... so I elected to buy my own. If you want nicer screens and live weather display then you're gonna have to pay (more) for it. I can say I feel slightly cheated when you look at how cheap portable car GPSes are, but what can you do?

so the 296 really is worth the money? I'm about to have the same problem as you (renting from a place with no GPS) and it's near MIA Bravo airspace.
I've been using a 172S with a KMD 550 MFD connected to a KLN 94 GPS. does the 296 show restricted/controlled airspaces as "clear" as the KLN 94?
it's a lot of money to invest in a GPS!
I also heard the 495 is worth the money, since there is no XM or weather it's cheaper (still expensive) but it also has the updates from the 496

Hi!
The 296 is NOT expensive if you get a used one, and it is DEFINITELY worth the money, used. YOu can get them refurbished from retailers so you have some kind of warranty/support.
The 296 shows all the airspace. The 296 also, in my opinion, has nothing "fancy" about it, except you can program in VNAV for your airplane (we don't do that). The only thing that I had to "learn" was how to extende the runway centerline to help with landing/approaches, if we wanted to use that feature. It is simple and user freindly.

Good good. What's a 296 going for these days? 600-700?

Of course the private airport information in the 49X and later series is much better.

YES!
I paid $300 for my used 295...what's a 495 go for, $1500? That's alot more.
