I had a student in a similar situation, he ended up getting a PA-32 Cherokee Six... I had never flown one till he bought it and I must say it's a great plane 300HP 3-blade prop great auto pilot, still a fixed gear so that will keep the cost down a bit.

Alright we've sat down and based on the information here, planequest (taken lightly), some internet research, and some WAGs, we have came up with some figures. Anyone willing to critique?

Fixed yearlies
Hangar: 6,000/year (500/month)
Insurance: 6,000/year (500 TT, 50ME, CFII/MEI)
Annual: 6,500/year (Annual + IFR)

Variable (200 hours/year based)
Fuel: 24GPH@$6/gallon = $144/hour or 28,800/year
Engine Reserve = 25/hour (25,000 per engine at 2,000 hours TBO) (5000/year)
Prop Reserve = 10/hour (WAG) (2000/year)

Total cost for 1 year based on 200 hours: 54,300, or 272/hour.

Like I said, a few of these numbers are total WAGs. Fuel is a bit above current market value but fuel over $6/gallon should not be unexpected in the coming years. Any thoughts on this math? Miss anything?
Thanks. I am going to crunch a 210 as well and see how it compares.

What airframe are those numbers for, a C310?

If you're an AOPA member, ask the question on the AOPA forums and they can verify those numbers for you.

Is $6500 for an Annual accurate? That sounds REALLY high to me. Or is for a C310? When I researched this many, many moons ago, I found that it may be a good/smart idea to set-up an LLC for the airplane. Then the owner pays the LLC for the usage. If you KNOW 200 hrs./year is going to be the number, than you can pay the total calculated /hr. rate; but if you're not sure how much you'll use it, pay a monthly fee for the fixed costs and then pay the remaining variables by the hour.

I also found the hangar pretty crazy. Where in the world is this hangar located?

It would be lower if there are no "surprises"...but probably better budget for surprises.

wouldn't those surprises be covered mostly in the prop and engine savings?

On a 310? No. The airframe can offer plenty of surprises on inspection.

Anywhere in the Chicago area. I looked at controlled and uncontrolled fields (DPA, ARR, 06C, JOT, LOT, PWK, etc) and couldn't find much cheaper than that. Tie downs at DPA were $75/month for "back in" spots and $150 for pull through but he wants to hangar and I agree.

Thanks all for the input! Like I said there are vary loose numbers and if anything I "overshot" to create a little bit of a "general" reserve.

That's insane!

Over here at KGNV you get a hangar for 200 and a tiedown for about 30 a month. 120 if you want it covered for sun protection...

then again this is a smaller city
