I'm a navy guy, but...
The air force probably offers the best opportunity out of all of the services for someone who wants to transition to airline work. This has to do with the types of aircraft they fly and career flexibility. The Air national Guard is the best deal for an airline focused person.
I agree with the previous posters in that a military officer candidate should understand the nature of his responsibilities and definitely be prepared to give his all to the task at hand. However, there is nothing wrong with joining up with the intent of serving out your junior officer committment and then moving on to other opportunities. Frankly, most of the fun to be had is in the first 10-15 years...after that it is mostly high-level bureaucracy and admin work (ask me how I know )
You should consider the military (fixed-wing) if you want to be a professional pilot...many of the best opportunities are there.
