Yeah. Sorry, I digressed...although it's interesting to hop between /A and /G IFR. IFR flight plans are supposed to be along airways, per the AIM - some part I don't remember.

Glancing at the AIM...there's surprisingly little said about "Route of Flight" under AIM 5-1-4...except this:
8. Block 8. Define the route of flight by using NAVAID identifier codes and airways.

Fascinating.

IFR as in, "I Follow Roads." Sorry, bad joke. 'Tis the season.

I would agree with you in your situation. Hard to fly to points when the points there is nothing but blue ocean around islands. Sounds like your not "flying the compass" though. More referencing it for map orientation and using other means to keep on that relative heading. Maybe I read what you said wrong though.

I finally did it! It is amazing how much of an appreciation I had for looking outside and it was a very satisfying feeling to find the checkpoints. Sure it was a lot of work and many times I had use my plotter to find the distance from that airport, that town etc. but as the flight progressed I could roughly tell how far I was and sure enough it was confirmed when I requested flight following at one point. It was a little bit a challenge with the snow because everything looked so different. Everything went well except one of my passengers really got sick. I was concerned about him for a while and he started to worry me. Then my instructors voice resounded in my head "fly the plane!" so that is what I did. Scared the bajeezeers out of me, a very good experience needless to say! Next time I gotta keep those bags handy, took us a good hour+ to clean the bird up! Yikes. Again thanks for your help, very good responses. I hope to do it again.

Or tell them "down the shirt." Grab the shirt collar, pull it out and have at it. That was the procedure at DWC with my instructor if I forgot a sick sack and needed it. I never brought or needed them.

Glad you did it. Sounds like you had the outcome (plus the "emergency") I had predicted in a long post early in this thread that I gave up on and dumped.

On an early cross-country training flight with an AF instructor I was under the weather and had to ralph as soon as we hit cruise. I opened the window and sent it down the side! Funny thing was, he was too busy berating me to even take the controls. I finally had to yell between horks, "Your Aircraft!"
