... does anyone have any recommendations on material for a CFI applicant?

My initial instinct is to study the "aviation instructor's handbook", the AFH, IFH, IPH, FARs, ACs, etc. and teach myself to be a CFI. Ironically, however, I know that my own learning style and schedule are not necessarily compatible with unguided bulk study, so I was wondering if there might be a publication, or series thereof, that would "bootstrap" me in a little.

I've looked at the Jeppesen manual, and it's certainly not something I'd mind having.. but I want to know what else is out there that people find useful for someone who might not have the time or focus to start at 14 CFR part 1 and read through.

PS. I did actually look through a bunch of old threads on here, but I couldn't really draw a conclusion, except that if money was an issue and time was not, the free online publications were the best choice.
During my 3 years of actively instructing, I always referenced "The Flight Instructor's Handbook" by Kershner. I think I bought it on Amazon and it does a good job of explaining the required maneuvers and many non-required ones in a different way than the FAA's AFH.

Good Luck! The world can always use more informed and competent flight instructors!

I am studying for the cfi myself. I decided to start with the PHAN. I go through each chapter and take notes on everything. It looks just like a huge outline right now but I plan to convert it to lesson plans later. If I run into anything that doesn't make 100 percent sense to me, I jump on the web and research the issue further. Once I am done with the PHAN, I plan to move to the Flying handbook. I am doing all the studying on my own right now without any type of structred program. I figure I should be safe by sticking with the FAA official materials.

I put up a comprehensive "10 Steps to CFI" page here: Jedi Nein's CFI Page.

I have to update the page once again as both Google and Qref have changed links. But you can search for any of the resources mentioned and they will come up.

Best of luck with the CFI! Let us know how it goes.
