My avg was 15-20hrs for solo while I was teaching Part 61. Maybe a few hours less 141. There is no "Standard" solo time. Regardless, after solo you still have appx 30+hrs of flying to do anyways, so don't sweat it. The more you think about it, the worse it becomes. Concentrate on perfecting/improving what you know and how you perform, and it will come. Good luck

Thumbs up Solo

I soloed just last week at KORL after 36 hours of total training. No matter how hard I tried and how prepared I was, I got stuck on landings! I started training last January in NY at a 141 school. During a family vacation to Orlando I stopped in at a local flight School ( Flight Ready Aviation) and asked to have one of the instructors fly with me to see what I was doing wrong. IN 1/2 hour he had me landing better than I ever have! I went home and didn't fly for two and a half months for various reasons. I made a decision to return to Orlando for a week of flying and Jordan at Flight Ready Aviation had me soloing in 3 days in 10 knot cross winds. I was told that one day it will just click and that is exactly what happened! Stick with it, I was ready to quit and now I am glad I stuck it out!

Your frustration is natural, I was there too. I thought I would never get it. But my instructor never gave up on me and he told me I should not give up either. I still remember that awful feeling you get on the way home. I did it in 30. Don't worry, you will get there, just keep practicing.

Not claiming to be a top gun or nothin', I'm training under Part 61 and for several lessons we did nothing but landings, flying the pattern, landings, repeat. Solo'ed at 11.8 hours with after 90 some t/o & ldg. I didn't "get it" at first either--had a tendency to come in too low, flare early, and slam into the runway. One day it just came to me and I had it. Be sure you fly the pattern consistently, configuring the airplane and being on airspeed. It'll come to you. I'm at 27 hours now--I started 3 months ago.

Default solo

I've signed off students for solo at 13 hours all the way up to 65 hours. I myself soloed at 13.5 hours. Don't worry about it too much.

A lot of students I've flown with have some magical number stuck in their heads for soloing time. Either they want to be the one out of thier batch to solo first, or solo in the lowest time, or whatever. They tend to focus on that, instead of actually flying the plane and in reality, it hinders their progress.

You'll solo when your instructor is confident of your flight skills and your ability to control the airplane and anything that is thrown your way without him/her in the airplane. It can be 15 hours or 30, it doesn't matter. Your frustration is normal, don't let it get to you. Keep practicing and keep studying.

If you fly a 172S/SP, I have lots of material on my website that you can use, - Main Page -.

If it is taking longer than you were planning on to solo, don't sweat it. Your instructor may be delaying a solo for a few hours or so just for one thing. Your safety. I've solo'd 5 students now and I promise that if you think you are nervous, the instructor is probably 10 times more nervous.

Now if you genuinely feel that he may be ripping you off and just dragging his feet for hours that you are paying for then I'd say something. But for now just do your best and the day will come when it is supposed to come.

If you're still can't solo after 100 or 200 hours then maybe you should rethink your goals, unless your still having fun then who cares - fly on.
