How old is too old to be considering a career as a professional pilot?

It depends on what you want to do and how you're going to do it.

If you go to an accelerated program like ATP and subsequently flight instruct upon completion, it is possible that you can amass the 1500 hours and ATP needed for eligibility by that time in 3 years or so.

Keep in mind, that's a very generous estimate...3 years of busting your ass and hoping that the industry is good.

You would get hired by a regional, and depending on your age, you might just want to stay there until a forced retirement at 65.

Also note that chances are you're not really going to make any money, but rather lose a whole bunch for training. If you already have a good career that's putting food on the table, I suggest you keep your job, get your private certificate, buy a used C172, and feed your love of flying that way. I think it will ultimately be more rewarding and you would be able to fly past 65.

Hmm... I'm not too far from your age. I guess I probably should reconsider. But don't frown, especially if you're already pursuing it. I think it's great that you are.

I already have my private pilot's license. And yes, I do have a very good job with great job security. However, I wish everyday I was flying.

But probably I should stay where I am. Thanks for the input.

Hi DAL 88 Driver, I did get your original message last night. I am just now getting around to replying. And I didn't think you were being negative at all. Just realistic. I wouldn't want it any other way.

I appreciate your input and certainly have many things to take into consideration!
