Thumbs up Flight Training traditions

I dont know how to do a poll, (insert big friggin hint here Mods...lol) but I'm wondering do any instructors still do the ole cut off the shirttail and write the info of first solo on it. My wife found my solo shirttail in a box the other day and put it in a frame and hung it on my office wall. It was a nice surprise, I had almost forgotten about it, and I realized its been a few years since I've even seen one on a flight school wall...Has this tradition just died out....I surely hope not

I had my shirt tail cut out, but I see a lot of students and CFIs don't like to do it, ruins a good shirt. When I'm instructing after my successful ride on the 2nd, I'll be carying out the tradition with my students.

Yeah thats why when I suspected I was close to soloing my CFI said to me you better start wearing cheap white T-shirts cause if you dont on the day I jump out you just lost that shirt....

Tradition is tradition, I lost my shirt and all my students lose theirs. you see it makes them better pilots.

And I think a shirt is a small price to pay to honor what will probably be on the top three list of big days in your life....Wedding (my wife made me put that in), birth of your children, and your first solo......

Cutting off a shirt tale sounds much nicer than the 'traditional' bucket of water that I got dumped on me as I walked back into the club after my first solo!

I don't do it, I give them a First Solo AOPA certificate instead.

Unless they tell me otherwise, I cut their shirt off. Then I print off a picture of a airplane landing and a nice mountain landscape take the pictures to the overhead projector and trace. People love the 'art.'

We do the old suprise water bucket attack! As soon as the CFI opens the door two people usually jump out and dunk the student. Works great and other than being a little wet, no harm done.
