drawing lines on the chart
when i practice my flight planning, i draw a route of my flight with a pencil on the actual chart. but because i constantly erase to draw a new route the chart becomes barely readable, and now need to buy a new one.
is there some trick so I don't have to draw on the actual chart and go buy a new one??
i even though about copying a chart on color printer, and have in with me (have one route on the cart, and alternative route on the copied pieces of paper)

Years ago, I spent the extra money on a laminated sectional...and it worked great, both for my work as a student, then as an instructing tool. If you get one, then get an Ultra-Fine Sharpie permanent marker and a cheap-o bottle of Expo, and you've got yourself a sectional that will last way longer than it's currency expiration. Here's where I bought it; this guy sells them all, not just the Phoenix one that he has advertised:

One summer, I did a lab where the entire purpose was to fly cross-countries in preparation for instrument training. Fortunately, the Atlanta sectional always expires in August. That chart had holes and black lines all over the place. That said, if you need a new chart, I'd say get a new one. If you draw in pencil, don't erase unless you really need to. If the line isn't passing through important info, just leave it.

I say just draw new lines. If you are flying direct somewhere from the same airport, you might be able to use the same line. A chart with neat lines looks better then a chart with erase marks. Also, I used to draw the first line lightly in pencil. then make it darker as it gets finalized and finally highlight over that line when its for certain that's your course. Its also neat to look back at an old chart you find somewhere and see lines of flights you've made and remember the flight.

I use the removable highlight tape. I think Sporty's sells it although I get mine at my FBO. Just use the tape to mark your route and you can pull it off after you're done. You can even draw your line on the tape that way it preserves your chart. It comes in several colors as well.
