Default light gun signal test

Hey have any of you guys ever took the light gun test? Have you ever known anyone to fail it? What are your experiences with it? Thanks for the input.

The color test? If you are semi-color blind you have a good chance with that because it is a LOT easier to distinguish a bright colored light than those little dot thingies. If you are hard-core color-blind it may not matter but definitaly give it a shot. There's not much you can do to prep for this, other than memorize what the signals mean.

Smoking degrades your vision all around...if you smoke I would stop immediately and take lots of eye vitamins (E, A, beta-carotene, lutien) for 6-8 weeks before you try the light test. But don't OD on the A vitamins, they can be toxic.

I had to do actual light gun signals on a checkride once (MEI?) when the airplane xmitter failed in the runup area...got the "taxi back to the FBO" signal.

Shurb,
I flunk the Ishihara plates every time, always have--red/green color blind. I did a practice light gun test at my local tower (NOT at the FSDO--it was an unofficial test just to see what would happen.) I flunked that too. Can't tell the white from the green. FWIW. Good luck.

Same boat here, can't distinguish red/green on those plates so I have to take the farnsworth faline test which your FAA flt doc can arrange for you

Big sky, I read on AOPA that the FAA doesn't accept the Farnsworth lantern test anymore.

Is the green not just a little darker than the white? ?I'm gonna take a mock LGST on tuesday. I talked to a doc yesterday who said he would administer ALL of the alternative test (twelve or thirteen) but he wants $700. If I cant get a SODA or pass an alternate I am screwed.

Hi Shurb,
The white and green may be detectably different in shading, but the problem is that they don't show them to you at the same time, so you can't compare them. They shine one color at you and you have to say what it is. Then they shine another and you have to say what that is. Without having the white and green together for comparison I couldn't tell which was which.
