As a junior FO in HKG you will most likely be getting a secondary line for quite some time (as in a line made up of open time; you won't get your schedule until 5 days before the bid month begins). Reserve goes senior. As we don't do "short" trips out here, it's not hard to get a week on/week off schedule or some variation of that. You are correct: if you don't live in HKG you don't get the housing stipend. There are several people that commute from various locations.
My understanding is that as long as one is HKG based and does the tax equalizing via the company's designated accounting firm, you'd be eligible for housing regardless of where you live. One can be a "Deviator" and commute from anywhere. Isn't that true?

Definitely not true. You AND your family have to live in Hong Kong.

Yes. No wiggle room there on that. You and your family must live in HKG.

...and every year you PWC asks you to document your days in the US.
There are 4 pilots no longer on the property and several who had to pay the company back some money. You do not want to play games on this issue unless you have a backup job.
Many pilots might think “whats the harm?” as long as you make your trips, do your job, etc. Some might even say having a few pilots in Thailand, the PI, Taiwan and Korea might actually help reliabilty by having pilots around if someone goes sick in the field....especially since our flight do not even orginate in Hong Kong. But...if you take the housing allowance, there are obligations imposed that some in the company feel are critical. Pilots do not make thhe rules here. When I chat with pilots asking about joining Fedex and life here in the FDA, I often see their gears spinning as they run down their options mentally. My point to them is whatever you think is reasonable or rational is not relevant. Press to test and you may be fired. Do not come over here thinking you will not be monitored, because you surender a lot of privacy when you have to use a company appointed firm to prepare your taxes. You might feel comfortable lying to your employer (not a good move) but lying to the IRS on tax forms just raises the stakes from losing a job to facing IRS legal issues. No thanks...
The silver lining if you do go is you probably do not need to worry about your family. After 3 months, most wives and kids decide they like it, and its getting them to leave that is the challenge.

Thanks for the clarifications. The FDA refers this issue to Chapter 6 Relocation, which is a pretty long and complicated chapter.

The 76 right seat was overmanned for all of last year. It is undermanned again, I suspect the company will flood the zone with new hires again to keep too many 75 FOs from moving up again.
