There is no lack of qualified personnel across the industry.
Then why is Delta short on the MD-88 and -717 right now? DAL is saying too many new hires are leaving to properly crew those two aircraft. (combination of new hires leaving, and no shows for new hire class)...

Huck,

I'm wondering why and who it's embarrassing because your friend hasn't been called? I'm quite sure that there are loads of really good guys, whose resumes are as top notch as your friend, but who also still haven't been called. Since none of the crew force appears to actually know or understand how guys are getting hired, why should it be embarrassing?

Asked and answered, it is embarrassing that no one knows the process.

I don't agree. Why do you think that it's your (not you in particular, but you as in the crew force in general) right to know and/or understand the hiring procedures. That's a management function, who at this time, appears to not be concerned with crew force input.

What's embarrassing is that a crew member who has been here for many years is willing to put his own reputation on the line to vouch for a very qualified individual and no-one is listening. It's embarrassing to me as one of the crew force. Since we went to the new hiring process, it is the first time FedEx has had a trend of documented issues of new hires, both attitude and performance. Forms were actually made for instructors to evaluate attitude and performance separate from the normal grade books. At a previous instructor meeting, the good doctor was addressing the group. One instructor asked, "so, Ive been here over 20 years, and give IOE to our pilots all around the world, does my recommendation mean anything?
The good doctor said nope.

So we trust this instructor to fly into some tricky places where English is barely spoken and has a new hire ioe guy in the right seat. But, we don't trust him to recommend someone that could contribute to the company as an aviator? YGBSM

Management has recognized that the system is broke and they have said they hope to change it soon. However, nothing seems to have been done.

As frustrating as the situation is for the pilots recommending candidates and for the candidates themselves, I have it in my mind that it is because of the lawyers and mitigation of lawsuits that the good doctor helped implement a computer to make candidate selections. Very similar to our QRH being a legal document more than just being helpful when abnormalities pop up.

My stuff has been in for over 6 years so I'll be floored if I get an interview invite. I never thought I'd be in the position of saying I think I have too much time now but here I keep updating and waiting.

Here is the short answer:
Input your info on the Pilot Application site.

The site does not automatically re-rank your apps when you update info. the system re-ranks when FedEx wants to reshuffle the deck.

The super computer program assigns you points based on your inputs and the FedEx asks for say people between 7-10 points and are also currently looking for people who flew mostly AOA or time in certain types.

The computer program adds points for things like LCA, school attended and subtracts for others one used to be taking longer than 4 years to graduate from college. Input the information very carefully and be sure to input any leadership and awards info and a complete employment history.

The list the computer program spits out is then given to flight management to pick the people for a interview. Currently the people are hand picked by a few and some are picked for certain aircraft.

Now you know.

There has definitely been a spike in 'attitude' issues since the new doc took over the screening process for new hire applicants. Your fleet boss/Capt/big-man/whatever-we're-calling-him[her] this week has the data...

And a few they have turned away I know would be outstanding hires. Not my process, not my call...but profoundly disappointing.

Then again, so is removing HEPA filters from my aircraft, but that is a different subject.

I really want to bleed purple. I like it here. But there are some things that continually disappoint and irritate. I hope more pilot input is somehow reinstated into the system.

So they actually do subtract for taking longer than 4 years in school like Delta does? Man, I must have had some mad points for flying.
