FedEx Hiring

Ironically the primary reason I jumped ship to Fedex was base. ANC. (I mentioned this somewhere here...). Delta didn't have one, closest = SEA and also most senior base (many years before I'd ever hold it). It wasn't the pay or the contract at FDX that enticed me (being prior Mil guy I was essentially clueless on what any of that meant). But, I have very good friends who schooled me early on that basing is perhaps the single most important factor to a "happy" life as an airline dude. Commuting can take what's a really good job and make it a less desirable one rather quickly over many years. Advice which I've told many since then which I find to be 100% accurate. Being domiciled close to, or at, home is worth an awful lot of money/contract 'stuff/etc when considering who to work for. One reason why I state I might have jumped ship for Alaska Air if they'd been hiring 2 or 3 years ago vs. Fedex. ANC is and probably always will be their Jr base. Guys want to know what they're getting into - APC among other sources (when guys are sniping each other!) can help them make the choice. "That's all I have to say about that"...

I think when the window really opens there will be more interest. This is the "perfect" place for some pilots out there. However, with the legacies hiring thousands to our hundreds, the percentages say a wannabe has a better shot of scoring an interview at a Legacy than here right now, hence the lines.
Unfortunately, the current negotiations climate does not help. Nobody wants to join an airline in the middle of a tough period, nor do they want to celebrate their new job by having to go on strike. I think a lot of old captains here told guys interested in 2004-2006 "its just business...ignore that...its a good place to work..." These days, I think the message is likely a bit more pessimistic and grim. I had 50 people in a seminar the day before WAI in Dallas. I asked "who is here and interested primarily in FedEx?" I got zero hands. We have become the back-up plan for many pilots...just another option. We'll fill our classes--I have no doubt. But I hope that our management can work with our union to get a contract, and turn this place back into a place that candidates beg to join. Its very different than it was just a few years ago...

We don't have that now. Others believe we'll never get it, so they left.
I still believe we will get a proper contract. Once I don't, I'm gone. How long will that be? Given the fact that I could most likely hold a domicile near a desirable place to live in less time than I've been here and I could watch our JV squad try to handle the yearly deice "event" while the sun is up? Time is growing short(er).
Others feel the same and the (young) natives are getting restless.
