Just out of curiousity...since the hiring window isn't officially open, how is it that you guys are getting asked these questions? This might make me sound like an idiot, but it sure sounds like the only way guys are getting called is if they are internals or is there some other secret handshake option that gets you into the hiring pool. Am I missing something?

Those of us already in the system (have an active app on pilotcredentials) can view / update / change our online apps. The 3 questions regarding the FDA's popped up in the last few days. When I logged in to update my last flight my questionnaire tab had a red X next to it indicating it wasn't complete. That's how I found out about the FDA questions. And yes, it says Paris...

If I remember correctly, it seems like there were some benefits to going to an FDA as a new hire. Can anyone expound on what they were? Also, I know it would not be necessarily easy, but if you had to, could you make an FDA work as a commuter? Are there perks or benefits to Europe vs. Hong Kong? I have been talking to the wife about it and she didn't shoot it down immediately. The kids aren't so excited, but they can't know how good it would be for them down the road to live in a foreign country for a while.
It would be nice to have more info before answering yes to those questions on the questionnaire.

Ignore this guy ... if you're lucky enough to get hired here I think the FDA would be a wonderful opportunity for a young family.
Things aren't perfect here but they're better than many places. It beats working for a living.

School tuition aside, I think it would be d@mn challenging at an FDA on new hire pay, especially with a family.

Regarding the two added FDA questions: Answer yes and yes. This does not commit you to anything, and IMHO may well be a very crude and imperfect (Paris--really?) "loyalty test." I think it's absolutely bogus that these have been added.
Do whatever it takes to get the interview. Then pass the interview. Once you have a class date & equipment/base offer, then you can say yea or nay depending on your circumstances. And just because you happen to accept an FDA assignment does NOT obligate you to move your family there--it just means you won't have the extra living allowances for housing, schools, etc. Will it be hard? Assuredly. Will it be worth it? Absolutely.
In the meantime, keep working those contacts at the legacies hiring by the bucketful.
Just my $0.02 worth.

I logged on last night to update my profile and saw the new questions.

Yes, Dadof6's post X2! Don't make those decisions now.
This flying job is very, very difficult to get. I don't know that I'd get it if I had to compete nowadays. I wouldn't rule something out because of the details. You can do anything for a couple of years. Commute, bring your family (and get in a little debt if needed), so what. Or maybe you won't end up going at all. If you do, it could be fantastic. You don't know, don't rule it out.
