Options are out there too that are doable with a drive commute as a back up to the winged commute.
That's been my strategy, and it makes for a lot less stress.

When I lived in BHM, I could show for my jumpseat, have something happen, jump in my car and still make most show times for 777 departures.

Yes, I'd be protected, but that doesn't help much when you lose a 70-hour trip because the jumpseat crapped out.....

I'd look at BHM, MOB, MSY.... and there's many others.

Ooops. I thought you had already been hired, my bad. Guess I need to learn to read again. Good luck on the interview. No pressure, right?

7) There are rumors of perhaps 500 retiring next December 31st.

That's almost 10% of the pilots.
Why are so many leaving?

We hear these rumors all the time. However, I do think we will see a decent number retire on Dec 31. Many retirement eligible guys were waiting to see if the retirement would improve before making the jump. We just signed a contract that gives a bonus for those giving a years notice and retiring on Dec 31. I have no idea how many put in their notice, but it's a one time deal. If you change your mind, you aren't eligible for the money again. So I think most of those that put in notice will actually retire.

I have no idea what the real number is. I doubt it was 500, but I suppose it's possible. If I had to guess I'd say about 300, but it's just a guess. I will say the company is really ramping up hiring.

Last number I heard was around 189 max, give or take a few I'm sure. I think there are around 115 or 120 that have to retire because of age 65. I haven't looked at the number in a while, but it's some where around there.

I also know of some (at least 3 personally) who will retire with minimum notice (1 day?). It makes no sense to me, but it sounded as if they see it as a sort of 'revenge' for our TA/CBA, at least from the couple of guys who shared their plan with me.
