Anyone who doesn't get that Memphis is a uniquely dangerous place is likely clinically divorced from reality.

That would be 100% of the pilots at FedEx who don’t commute.

Well, commuting to MEM might become another "unique to Fedex career challenge," in a few months, you know, like the current unique challenges of getting hunted for sport outside of your workplace or a completely random aggressive cancer cluster.

What do you want fedex to do about it? Hire private security escorts to and from work? Move the hub to Pleasantville USA?

Stay away from the bad areas and don't antagonize the aggressive drivers. I am always surprised when I fly with pilots that live in mid town or down town or mud island. Puts you right in the cross hairs of the crime. Yes the crime is bad, don't help them out by making yourself and easy target. Like don't go running in a high crime area or get gas in the middle of the night especially in a bad area. Pretty common sense. Spent a lot of time in a crash pad in MEM to know I did not want to live there. Commuting sucks but better than living in memphis.

Been to Indy lately? Down town is a crap hole. Been to Oakland, Seattle? Blame our goverment for not cracking down on the lawlessness.

Oakland I will grant, but I'd guess you haven't visited Indy lately. Indy has these establishments called "businesses" that provide various goods and services in their downtown. Basically everywhere off Beale is "bad" according to the MPD.

Fedex IS Memphis business, at this point. Perhaps there is nothing they can do, and perhaps the city is that non-functional/dysfunctional, at this point. Guess what, who wants to come here, then? And, if the company elects to make doing business in a Caracas or Mogadishu or Brazzaville analog, then, the human cost of that just got a little higher. What we certainly don't need more shrugging from the members of crew force who elect to carry the water of management stuck in 2008, or 1938.

The difference is those are cities with bad areas. The entire city of Memphis IS the bad area.

And OAK as well. Basically other than the ANC and IND bases, with their tiny populations, the majority of the airline is based in really terrible places to live. Why is this important? It goes into what we are negotiating for our pay. Our pay needs to reflect we functionally have no choice in our basing, and what mild choice reflects our bases are terrible.

Now, I know there is cohort at Fedex who are either in the "I don't care if you have to avoid machine gun fire, I'm getting my pension bump" or "Its not so bad in Collierville" camps, but what we are valued now needs to reflect the conditions we face at work, along with the value we create. Nor should our ability to commute, itself at some level of unknown risk, the work around.

Most of the complaining on here is coming from the same people who posted in the mass exodus thread 14 months ago. One of those people even said that they could already be a captain at the airline they left making over $350k after the first year. Yeah, but they are still here. So far, less than 100 left even though we won't hire until 2033. LOL!!!!
