Maybe you’re thinking of times like now where block hours are down, but the last few years have highlighted how bad reserve is. And I live in Memphis. Reserve was by seniority, not by choice.
My wife commented on the home life being impacted by the volatility during COVID versus now.

I’ll disagree with this. It may be awesome now for fleets that are not 767/777. But the last three years were not awesome. I just did a spreadsheet for last year and I had a utilization rate of 81%.

I think it was worse for reserves. All those revisions / extensions earned line holders quite a bit of additional pay. Reserve holders only got hours toward RLG. RLG accrual sometimes comes with extra days off and sometimes (rarely) extra pay.
You can proffer or giveaway trips, you can only drop (ha) reserve.
Lastly, I sat a lot of reserve in 2019. It sucked. It needs improved.

Newsflash Not, COVID sucked for everyone! I was a line holder and with multiple revisions, extensions, lockdowns, rule changes, etc. life was miserable and seniority meant nothing. So I would say using the last 3 years as an example for anything is probably not the best. I’m not saying we shouldn’t look for improvements anywhere we can, but let’s not use the last 3 years for comparison as to what is normal.

I want reserve to be an option for everyone throughout the seniority list based on their needs. For their entire career. Sometimes reserve makes sense for vacation months, training months, holidays, etc. It shouldn’t have to a seventh circle of hell or relegated to the ultra junior.
I don’t have to do reserve anymore. That doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be better than what it is.

Of course pay rates and benefits are better here. As it should be, along with EVERYTHING else compared to a regional. So you GMAFB! Why do you insist on incessantly repeating management talking points? At least you didn’t repeat the other talking point about giving things up to get other things…

Once again, incorrect assumptions. I have numerous buds who live in Memphis and they brag about never getting used on reserve pre Covid and now once again. I commuted to reserve at the start of my career. I dropped and traded R-days. Contingency dropped for deadhead trips. Many do drop for draft off reserve days.
Improving reserve with small changes would be great. Let’s start with eliminating the last minute HSBY periods that magically appear in open time. The contract openers have something in it regarding eliminating HSBY.
As others have pointed out you can’t use Covid period as a data point for drafting an entire section of a contract.

Theoretical at best. The fact of the matter is that we have the worst reserve system in the industry.

Not theoretical at all. I did it quite frequently, as well as many other commuters. Some of my buds are on overstaffed fleets, and they are never getting used again. Beings they live in base they say it is like a vacation again.

Please don't quote this clown. He isn't a pilot here. His post you quoted even further proves that. We cannot "trade R days". I have tried on two occasions to swap with another pilot. It's not an option in VIPS, and scheduling won't do it.

I am talking about moving reserve days. Swapping one day for another. I did it numerous times. I have even traded my reserve days for another buddies trip. He lived in base and didn’t wanna fly. It sounds like you need to go into Vips and start learning.
