This all sounds great in theory, but it's not always practical in my experience. Seems like it might be an option in some cases, but it can't consistently work based on the way many trips are constructed. Definitely less fun (although at the moment with Covid BS it's probably no big deal).
That doesn’t work on a 10-14 day round the world trip with a 48-72 hour layover thrown in the mix. Getting outside in the sun is important for both physical and mental health reasons. Even in Asia, some gyms aren’t available 24/7. Cap it off with the constant trip revisions that throw all long term sleep planning out the window, and you really end up sleeping when you are tired whether you want to or not.
I just finished a 10 day trip where only the first two legs flew as scheduled. I ended up with 4 days of unscheduled hotel standby. Then a back end deadhead converted to operate from Europe through Asia with a 20 hour layover before operating to Memphis. There’s not a chance in hell of staying on my hometown time zone for sleep purposes with that nonsense. And unfortunately, that’s how a majority of my trips have looked since COVID hit.

I've been flying long-haul international for 22 years.
In the beginning, we had each other for company. No matter how long the leg, how weird the time zone, we got together after the flight. We needed socialization. The alternative was a stolen USA Today and foreign language TV stations, or maybe a book you brought along.
Now, everybody's on the internet. You can facetime with family, chat with buddies and get all that great confirmation bias from your fb feed. All this takes time - time we used to spend down at the lobby bar or at the Jet Lag.
It's sad, to me. Then throw in the Covid restrictions and we've become like the folks we make fun of....Our reality is more and more online.....

FEDEX Hiring 2021
I’ve got about 2750 hours, more than 1500 of which is multi turbine pic in a typed turbo prop. College degree. About to take a type ride on a large jet for a different ACMI that FedEx flies. Clean record. FedEx is my end goal, but I have yet to actually meet any pilots from there in my current travels to get a rec and I already have my application in.
Besides a recommendation, what can I do to stand out on my application? Any insight or tips for me? Thanks!

Become a check airman or some other leadership position. I didn’t have any recommendations so it is possible to be hired without one.
