I've heard of something called double deadheads...how hard is it to hold that as a new hire? Is it more prevalent in a particular fleet?

If I understand it correctly they buy the ticket from your base to where you go to work...but you can push that money into your travel bank?

What about the rumors of them shutting down the ANC base? Would this just be for the MD, and another airframe would take its place?

Someone told me that ANC could be dropped considering the range of the 777 and lack of the MD. For someone who lives here and wants to live in base this is concerning.

Double deadhead refers to a deadhead at the front and back end of a trip. Every fleet has them, seniority to hold them varies, but isn't out of the question to get them as soon as you get off reserve. Not sure you can quantify exactly what seniority it would take in any given seat to hold such lines.

Yes you can use the bank money to fly from Hometown to the designated city instead of Memphis to the designated city. Onus is on you to get there on time in the event your deadhead flight gets jacked up.

Commuting on FedEx is probably as easy (relatively speaking) as it gets short of home basing.

Rumors of a base closing are just that. I doubt anybody on here could tell you with any degree of accuracy what bases will be around when you get here. Chasing domiciles (or out cities) isn't the best strategy long term because they can change.

That said, I haven't heard any compelling reasons why ANC would be closed any time soon. Not saying it won't happen, just that I haven't heard any substantial rumors/official correspondence that it was in the works. None of the other bases either for that matter.

Of course its possible they could announce it closing tomorrow. I just don't think its likely any time soon.

Is the 5 year deal applicable for the HKG base as well?? Is it capped at 5 years?

No 5 year limit in HKG.

Wasn't their a requirement to have lived in the US for the past XX years before being eligible to be hired, or did that change?

I'll jump in....this info is probably covered elsewhere but here goes...

No residency requirement/US Passport any longer. Latest FOM revision was to "current passport", not US passport. To me that implies green card types can be employed here. QC that with pilot recruitment--I am not on their speed dial and choose to leave them alone.

Anchorage has been rumored gone since before I got hired in 2002. Even with the 777 its still here. Look at the ramp and many days you see more 777s than MD11s. I seem to remember from either captain's class or a recurrent some mgt type pointing out that getting goods from Asia could at times move faster through ANC because it cleared customs quickly and from ANC could then go to the big east coast markets smoothly and swiftly. In other words--it was quicker overall for the packages to stop in ANC than to fly non-stop to EWR or IND. In any case, there are a lot of tradeoffs with lift/fuel and so far we still seem to do a lot of stopping in ANC.

Additionally, Alaska has TWO senators and 1 representative for a state with a very small population. Providing good jobs outside the oil industry is pretty good for Alaska, so Is suspect it also good for FedEx in having some friends on the hill. Lots more to consider than just how far a 777 can fly unrefueled...

One of our pilots is not the State Senator for the Wasilla area and is an ANC based MD-11 FO. I suspect he could probably give you an idea of the impact FedEx has on the Anchorage economy...

Just curious, what kind of flying does CGN do? Day turns? Night turns? Where are the overnights? Usual Schedules? 4 day on 4 day off or what?
