HHN (Hahn, GR) Layover Info
Here is a little gouge if any of you guys are lucky enough to get one of these layovers in the next 6 weeks...
For the rest of Feb and all of March we will be doing some charters out of HHN and you will be staying at the Bellevue hotel in Traben-Trarbach, www.bellevue-hotel.de. The rooms are very nice and there is wireless connection throughout and breakfast is free in the morning. One downside is no gym but there is a great biking/jogging path along the river. It is NOT a contract hotel so save your folio.
It is fanatastic and beautiful little town right on the Mosul river in the wine country. Mom and pop shops and restaurants only, nothing commercial. ALL SHOPS close by 1p on Sat and closed all day on Sunday. Make sure you remeber to pack your European electrical adaptor and batteries for your toys.
Enjoy...these layovers are a thing of the past!

I laid over there for 2 years 96-98. The Eifel is one of the coolest parts of Germany, and (generally except for Dutch campers) tourists are rare.
Many of the wineries there have wine tasting events...highly recommend you try it if you have the time. Cochem castle is nearby and is also worth the tour.

Hotel was interesting. They put us up a couple buildings down from the hotel proper and it was called the residence or something like that. My room was in the attic of the building. Literally, there roof joist are the ceiling. Very big room but very odd. No AC no Fans, but it did have a piano? Great view of the river. Had real good schnitzel at a bar, from the hotel turn left and it's the first upstairs outside balcony. Great outside views, just sitting along the river. Short LO so we didn't get across the river but it looks pretty cool. Long LO it looked like you could rent a bike and ride the river up or down. Also, boats dock right at the hotel. Don't know where they go but they are tourist type boats.

This is a little late, but if you stay there again, at the top of the hill inside the bend in the Mosel River above Traben-Trarbach's vineyards is Mont Royal (EDRM), a grass strip, with a glider club (Duetsche-Amerikanischer Segelflug Klub). I've gotten instruction there, real nice people. The club was formed by the American fighter pilots from Hahn Airbase in 1953. Getting rides is easy, just walk up and express interest. Typically a winch-launch, lots of fun! I think it's March thru October opns.
