New FO Reserve
So anyone have advice on how to get the best shot at actually flying as a NH on reserve when you don't have the seniority to proffer for anything and actually really get it? As opposed to just sitting around in the crew room at LGA every day?

Once you hit the dreaded middle of the reserve list standby is pretty much your only chance (assuming no OT)..I suffered through 2 full months of it for that very reason. It literally is the worst place to be on the list for a commuter or someone who wants to fly....too junior to proffer into stuff and too senior to get called from a RAP

I'm TDY in LGA this month towards the top of the reserve list, so this month has been alright. Plus, no standby, which is a nice change after 2 months on a standby line. The middle just plain sucks. I think I may be able to hold at least a composite in ORD next month...it's gonna be close though.

1. Consider home base TDY/base transfer. Move in base where flying is.
2. Rent a room or apartment in base then pick up OT on your days off. The flying adds up after 1-yr and change to where you have enough hours to upgrade to where u want, a base/fleet you want, PIC time, and your apps out. While lazy FOs complain they are not flying.
3. Get assertive, add yourself to Reserve turn back list/volunteer list. Call Scheduling ask if they have any flying for you.
4. Get QuickTrade app if you have not already. Set up Trip Notification. It’s worth it. The app is free for 2 months, and the yearly subscription cost pays for itself in a day of OT and overall usefulness. Lots of cheap pilot on Reserve who think the app is of no use to them.

DTS (drop trip sequence) drops the full trip if the trip overlaps your vacation days in any way. You will not be paid for the flights dropped outside of your vacation days though.

If you want to still get paid for the conflict trips, you would choose slide and CS would move your vacation around to make it not conflict, meaning you would fly your schedule and get paid for it.
Just depends on whether you want more money or more time off. Most people I have spoken to about it seem to like the DTS option, as it gives more days off and allows you to pick up OT flights while on vacation should you choose.
