They must have been trying for Xmas off because being the bottom on reserve is way worse than the worst line.
Line holders can trip trade, so if you get an uncommutable line, you can make it commutable. There's a really slim chance he can trade for Xmas off too. I pulled it off with Thanksgiving this month. Other line holder benefits: You'll get paid extra if you get flying added on to the end of your sequence. Reserves get turned back to eternity and nothing extra for it. I could go on and on.
This guy lucked out since guys senior to him are either inexperienced and don't know the benefits of holding a line, or they're locals who prefer reserve QOL.

Face it, when people talk about reserve time at an airline, it supposed to be a measure of upward movement, since it is assumed that the junior people will be on reserve until their seniority enables them to hold a line. Here at envoy the lines are so awful that many, many people choose to be reserve rather than fly a line--and that despite our atrocious reserve rules and poor staffing! How do I know this? I am one of those people. I assume I will stay reserve until I flow, unless the lines greatly improve.

Would LGA be a better base than ORD for a guy just starting training?Looks like the class of 30 didn't help any of the past class ORD 145 new hires. Either way I'm going to have to commute. I wonder if they are going to continue hiring more into ORD or if they are going to start focusing hiring into LGA.

Ummm...except that all of the bottom reserve lines work Christmas, and yet people are still choosing reserve through Christmas over hard lines through Christmas.

You must live local and be fairly senior. I can see bidding reserve to avoid 4 day trips until more day trip and 2 day lines come back.
