When on reserve, if you proffer for a trip and then get it, can you be stuck back onto a rap after returning from the trip? For example, the day before, you proffer for a 5 pm departure, returning the next day at 8am. Is that it, you're done when you get back at 8am? Or, can/will they make you sit all day since you only really flew a couple hours? Thanks.

They can only make you go back to RAP or standby if they give you a day trip when you were already on a RAP or standby. After an overnight they can only add more flying, not additional RAP/standby. And if you proffered for a trip and were awarded it they can only add more flying, not a new RAP/standby assignment.

The thing about assigning you a RAP after a flight assignment, is it would be hard for them to make positive contact unless you voluntarily answered your phone when you weren't required to.
The only times you will ever see a reassignment after a flight like you described is on CDO/split duty overnight or extremely rare cases. If you finish early they could give you a flight assignment later that night after ten hours of rest. I have only heard of them doing this to CAs. I have never had them try to give me an assignment after I have finished early except for when I was on a CDO.

Couple things.... how you described it is illegal for part 117. Rap and airport stand by require 10 hour rest before starting.

However we would pretty much be useless if they tried to do this with the 117 rules.

They almost never put people back into a RAP. I always bid reserve for years and I have never seen that happen ever. Like someone else said, you would have that 4 hour break to go home and back if they did. Then there is "fatigue" etc.
They can and will extend you into more flying though however.. this is why it is dangerous to proffer for something that gets you back really early (if you don't want to be extended). Especially if there is weather the night before and/or very few people available. Sometimes you can get lucky, most times not. You will get tagged with a 1 to 4 hour sit and another turn or overnight again. Which is pretty awful after a 0430 wake up. It is usually safer to get in around noon-2pm after all the early morning RAP and standbys have already all got screwed over covering the previous nights problems along with the morning sick calls and commuter issues plus now the 10am RAPs are available after they wiped out all the 4am guys. I rarely get extended doing this and go home.
I would say on average getting finished before 10am the chance of additional flying added to you is at least 60-70%. So about 1 in 3 times you will get lucky and sneak out and go home early.

All this obsession with airplane makes no sense. What airplane you fly makes no difference at all...rather focus on career progression, base (assuming you live in base or commutability), pay, etc...lastly by a far shot should be airplane.
