I know It’s probably not going to make a difference but everyone here flies into Chicago should file an ASAP report or even an ASRS citing the safety concerns of having no northern/southern oriented runways to deal with winter weather.

The more reports that are collected the more ammo there will be to pressure the city into maintaining a north/south runway

Correct. Medium to poor up to N3 and poor after.

The only pressure one could apply to the city of Chicago to maintain a north/south runway includes pushing suitcases full of non-sequential hundred dollar bills.

While I admire your thought process it won’t happen. They have committed to all east west runways and are building everything around that. It’s not just a simple “maintaining a north south runway”. I can only think of one other time this year that I would have preferred a north south runway and even then there wasn’t much of an issue.

At the end of the day we just need to be more diligent and if things look sketchy we divert, go around or use another runway. This accident has really opened my eyes to the winter ops aspects and I will certainly be paying much closer to the winds if the runway is anything less than 6/6/6/.

Personally I am more of an 8/8/8 kinda guy.

Really though, good words you have written.

When they decided to make the airport east/west they only wanted to maintain one set of diagonal runways. The 22’s worked better with the ultimate airport layout and the airspace works better with MDW.

When the FAA came out a few years ago and said no more converging approaches, it didn’t make sense to have runways in every direction anymore.
