That's the thing. Very few people start their day with "I think today would be a great day to get a step letter." Mistakes happen. Many things are out of our control.

Our manuals are such that if you haven’t inadvertently done something contrary to FM1 that could theoretically get you a step letter you don’t work here. That goes double for captains, not because they’re renegades or bad pilots but because they have 10x as many rules to contend with.
