I wouldn’t be surprised to see the company explore the satellite base, mini-base, pilot base idea again. Just about every thread on major and regional alike all say the biggest quality of life improvement is living in base.
If the company finds a way to open mini-bases all over the place for starting/finishing trips it would make recruitment and retention that much easier. It could be as simple as adding a DH to/from the outstations mini-base. Guys in the full domicile could still bid the line, and just drop the deadheads.
The biggest discussions for new pilots all seem to center on not commuting, or the easiest commute. So, open a bunch of mini-bases on paper and they just increased their hiring ability without increasing flow or adding any additional pay raises.
It looks like Republic may already be doing exactly this to make themselves more attractive. They’ve opened two small bases in the past three months and are now talking another in MSP. No flow, long upgrades, not the highest pay but the line is out the door to get in there. Apparently treating people well and having good QOL works. Word obviously gets around.
Note to management:
Fix the work rules, open more bases to start/finish trips, and treat your employees well.
Places that are doing this are getting new pilots without fancy flow schemes or raising pay.

I don’t know him either, but they said he’s in the ICU in a medically induced coma with multiple broken vertebrae? That seems like a big deal, a bit more unique then a broken leg or the common cold. I think it’s nice the CPO is trying to organize to help a fellow pilot, I’m supportive of that.
