I got my conditional offer and scheduled a class date last week. The earliest available was Nov. 29th. I scheduled ATP-CTP for a few weeks before that. Today I just got a phone call from recruiting saying that they are “doing away with training on the 29th” and now I’m going to orientation to put me on payroll on Nov. 18th instead. They said I’d have 7 days notice when my Indoc date will be, but it will most likely be after the holidays. Is this cause they need the instructor pilots back on the line for the busy season? Or is there something else going on that I’m missing?

Probably want you on payroll asap so you don't go somewhere else like many new hires are doing

But why delay training? I’ve already signed my offer for them to pay for my ATP-CTP so getting me on payroll 10 days earlier doesn’t make that much of a difference.

Why not? If you expect things mgmt. does to make sense from their own perspective or anyone else's, you're at the wrong airline. This place nut punches themselves regularly. AA too, to some extent, but there are very few companies that continue to exist that behave the way Envoy does. Strap in and get used to it - or learn to enjoy it, like I have - either way, the sooner you do the less disappointed you'll be.

Out of curiosity, when did you interview? I returned my CJO via email a week ago and haven't heard back about an orientation or class date (interviewed early Sept.). If there's going to be a significant Endeavor-style training bottleneck, I might consider other options...

In any case, enjoy the paid vacation until you really get Envoyed.

I would guess it has more to do with availability of some element in the training pipeline. This could be ground instructors, sim instructors, class room space, ground procedures training device availability or the acheeleys heel of every airline when things get busy, sim availability.

There is also a very healthy captain upgrade vacancy bid which will eat into the elements listed above.

This business is very complex with a ton of moving parts. Some places are just better at dealing with it than others.

One third of the ENY fleet is still 145s. (Yeah, they don’t talk a whole lot about that. Bad for recruiting, and especially bad for you if you’re on the bottom of the seniority list for your class) The sims are being moved, and it is a long process, so taking 145 capacity out of the picture fo a while.
