That's a pretty wide open question and I'm not sure there's a typical. I'd say 4-5 on, 3 off for the most part was our class' experience. If you take the 200 (particularly DTW) you shouldn't be on reserve more than the remainder of your OE month and 1 after. I wouldn't commute to reserve without a crash pad. Good news is you can get them for just the 2 months you'll need. I was able to commute in/out on my start/end reserve days and it wasn't too bad (but I paid for the pad, and it was worth it)!

Are crashpads easy to attain at DTW?

Seem to be. Everyone from my class that wanted one got one. At least half of us will be out by end of July because we got lines already.

The affidavit has to be notarized. I don't think they look into it all, just don't be a dumbass and put two different addresses on the affidavit, etc.

Most of the hotels are priced at crash pad rates. You really don't need a crashpad at DTW when america's best is priced at ~$50 a night and you get a hot breakfast the next day.

Different but related question: do many people move permanently to DTW or NYC and find roommates in training?

A couple of the younger single guys in our class "moved" to DTW. One of them is already planning on "moving" to NYC when it opens in September. For the most part, though, not really.

I was going to try that route (and once reserve is over I'll dump the pad and go back to it), but I sat reserve 12 days (scheduled 15, dropped 3) after OE. I flew twice during those days and only 1 overnight. That would've been a minimum of $550 in the "cheap" hotel. I pay half that for a private room in a pad and can have groceries and clothes here. Top that off with the fact that mine was same day commutability on start/end: Some guys aren't so lucky so the hotel costs only increase.
It's up to each person, but I'd recommend a crash pad while you're on reserve.
