My comment wasn't super clear... it's probably more important to keep the housekeepers happy.

That being said, when the van driver slices forty minutes off your ten hour layover, then you might feel differently.

Typically, yes. Spent a lot of time in hospitality before coming here. Most who haven’t will never understand and are more than likely the habitual non-tippers.

Gotta love when the ones who are supposed to set the stage are the ones executing a poor performance. Don’t start our new hires off on the wrong foot. Set a good example and we won’t have this issue. LCP’s make more money than most of us. No excuses.

To the ones who make the excuse that they forgot to get cash and don’t want to pay ATM fees. Do you realize how many places offer cash back these days? Most of these places are right next to the hotel or within a short walk when you go to grab food. Stop the nonsense.

Agreed. I pretty much tip all of the people on that chart except for dry cleaners and I'm just finding out housekeeping. Are most guys tipping housekeeping?

I always tip the van driver unless they were super terrible (really late generally) and most times I tip even then.

For the guys that say they don't carry cash, I have two solutions. 1) when I go to the grocery store I use the self checkout and get $4 back, if you go twice, $8 is enough for a trip. Also, I went to the bank and got a $100 of $1's, those are in my watch box, when I get out my work watch, I take out however many 1's I need if I haven't been to the grocery store.

I agree with the Baradium, you don't forget socks, you shouldn't forget tip money.

If you just want to be a cheap jerk, that's fine, you do you, but at least own it, "I forgot to get cash" is a lame excuse.

Delta pilots don't tip us when they deadhead on our airplanes, are they cheap jerks? After all, they make a lot more money than we do.

Just had to stir the pot.

Oh no, they tip. They all pop in and remind us that "we're hiring, get your application in." As if we don't know that.

Is it standard practice to tip pilots?? Cuz if it is, I've been doing a terrible job.

I actually DIDN'T use the argument that we make more than the van drivers so I don't think the Delta vs us thing even applies. It's standard and expected that we'll tip them, we all know that, as I said if you want to be a cheap jerk, that's your call, just don't pretend it's anything else.

Not carrying cash in 2019 is completely normal, and being in NYC for the majority of the month only attracts more attention to you when you pull out your metro card and have a wad of ones in there. Even if it's only a few dollars that's an easy steal for someone compared to my cards.

I agree tipping the van driver is good practice, but to shame someone because they didn't have ones on them, in this day and age, is absurd.

To offer some perspective... for the last 10 years I haven’t had the need to carry cash at all except for tipping van drivers. The internet and smart devices have made the need to carry physical cash obsolete. I bank with USAA which only has a few physical branches. Most of their banking is online. Internet only savings banks like American Express High Yield savings offer 2%+ APY which is way better than what you get with a traditional bank. Using debit cards is not as safe as charge or credit cards so I almost exclusively use a charge card for everything and pay it off at the end of the month interest free. There’s direct deposit, mobile check deposit by taking a picture, transfer, PayPal, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, Google Pay, Cash App, Venmo, etc. So there’s literally no need to carry cash except for tipping van drivers which is an inconvenience nowadays. The future is #cashless

I have tipped housekeeping up to $20 while in training for cleaning the kitchen. Usually, I leave a few bucks, in fact, I will stiff the van driver if I only have a few dollars, because housekeeping is more important, and they make less.

We don't actually make enough per diem as we should. For an overnight in New York, we should get $75 dollars from the company for these type of expenses. When I do contract work for another company(non-flying), they always provide me with these expenses.
