Since Jepps is shutting down the offset presses, keeping paper subscriptions will become too costly to be effective. Surprised Endeavor hasn't realized this yet.

Because that's not how the FAA works. It may be faster to get something that has already approved elsewhere approved for us, but they still have to give us the blessing. Manuals have to be written. Training programs developed, backup plans made, etc etc. It's not as simple as just handing everyone an iPad.

EFBs will be online by the end of the year. They are going to start the testing phase soon. Right now they are looking at platforms and mounts. This is what we were told by the fleet manager in recurrent this week. He is on the planning committee for EFBs. Also our VP of flight ops has gotten the budget through to the finance department.

I agree though, we look like fools hauling around flight cases.

My understanding is that its the entire approval process that takes the 12 months.
Not the first phase. we'll see the testing on the line from select pilots within 6 months, and like the poster above said, full implementation by the end of 2016.
Looking forward to never worrying about Jepp updates again. This was long overdue, but at least happening.

Even after they're issued, enjoy hauling BOTH around for a while. We've had the Surface 3 here at XE for 3 months now, still have to lug the 40-pound OJI-maker around and keep it all up to date. Apparently some people here still don't understand that you have to keep everything, both paper and electronic, up to date and fully charged when you start your day before the FAA will give us the blessing to have our big Jepp bonfire.
