Age? Check ride failures? Medical wavers? What??
How about how much sleep he got last night...if he felt good enough to fly that day. How about if he got enough to eat that day. Wasn't so rushed that he didn't get a meal break. How about asking if he isn't over stressed from things going on at home... that his mind is in the game.

I spoke with a pilot who was part of the hiring process at Delta during the last round of hiring. He worked closely with HR. I asked what Delta was looking for. He told me that they didn't want pilots with more than 6,000 hours because it showed a lack of ambition for career progression to the majors. Take it for what it's worth but if you think that management has the same "seniority rules" mentality that unions have then you are mistaken. And as far as getting a "worthless piece of paper" and then getting hired I will gladly be part of your interview group. I agree about your statement of not needing it but that's not how the world works. If you want to move up you have to play the game on their terms. It's not your company.

Yeah, but if one puts a foreign object in said inebriated coed's mouth, she is likely to blow chunks rather than the intended object.

Re passenger perceptions: I have had many ask how long I have been flying (years), some ask how many hours, but never once have I been asked about my degree.
And for all you youngsters who have been asked if you were old enough to be flying, what they are really saying is, ” I really wish you were middle aged!”

I'm not saying it is necessary to have a college degree to be a pilot. I am trying to explain a possible rationale of why having one would be required and some of the benefits to continuing education. If the company you want to work for requires that you have a college degree, then you have to have a college degree. You can whine and moan as much as you want that it's not fair but that's reality.
And a college degree is now REQUIRED to be a commissioned officer in the Air Force and a Master's degree is now virtually required to make Major. In fact, most NCOs have to have completed some level of post-secondary education to progress up to Senior NCO. It isn't necessary to do your job, but it is a discriminating factor when looking at applicants. There will never be a pilot shortage at the major level and there is no incentive to change the requirement.
