And this would probably have no relevance to your chance of dying in an aircraft accident. How old and how much time and what kind of history did Veldhuyzen van Zanten have?

I spoke with a pilot who was part of the hiring process at Delta during the last round of hiring. He worked closely with HR. I asked what Delta was looking for. He told me that they didn't want pilots with more than 6,000 hours because it showed a lack of ambition for career progression to the majors. Take it for what it's worth but if you think that management has the same "seniority rules" mentality that unions have then you are mistaken. And as far as getting a "worthless piece of paper" and then getting hired I will gladly be part of your interview group. I agree about your statement of not needing it but that's not how the world works. If you want to move up you have to play the game on their terms. It's not your company.

Yes, its a lack of ambition.

Those pilots could have created their own major airline thereby creating spots for them to be hired into.

Lack of ambition.

The whole college degree argument gets my blood boiling. Yes it should be advantageous to have on a resume, but no way should it be a deal breaker.

Just ask Richard Branson or Bill Gates if their lack of education held them back in life.
I'd rather have the college graduate. The alternative person you described is often from some other failed career or business that bought their way into the job through a bridge program/PFT "academy" (that now couldn't even legally operate in the US) and had the luxury of better timing/luck for a meritless quick upgrade. Sitting on the left or right seat and keeping the plane upright isn't rocket science... Although for some of you it probably is.

We aren't Richard Branson or Bill Gates. If you have the drive and self-motivation of self-made industry leaders and billionaires you wouldn't continue filling out airline applications.
