Things have changed that much? When I went thru, every question on every test was covered well in class.

I second this...Just got out of ground-school, spent almost every waking hour studying and got high 80's/low ninety's on the tests. Search for my username on quizlet...most the info is in flashcard form there.

I can most definitely say that every question on every test was NOT covered well in class.
Maybe the instructors are just in a different place now than they were?
I did think systems was pretty easy, as long as you listened in class and did some moderate studying on your own.
The first two tests, though....yeesh. They sucked.

Thanks for clarifying. I suspect the main difference is the going home, self-study part. When I went thru, we were in MSP for the whole thing. Class every day, even on a Saturday (due to a Monday holiday I think). I am guessing that the extra instructor exposure meant more coverage of the pertinent stuff. WIth self study, you cannot be as focused, obviously.
Not that GS was something you could blow off when I went thru, you still needed to pay attention, and we studied in groups after class. I think we had one person in the class ahead of us fail a test, one in our class, and two in the class behind us. Definitely not something you want to blow off, those academic classes.

I come from a military background where it's a building-block approach, plus...they do the thing where they send you home for a week to come back for that first test.

Anyone who went through the recent self study classes should let training know how they felt about it. Use the training feedback form online. I wasn't a fan of the idea when they announced it for a couple reasons.
Delta can get away with it because look who they're hiring. How many of our new hires have never worked in 121 before? Not only is it a lot of material to study but if you've never gone through it before you may not even know how to properly study this type of material. You don't know what's important and what's not.
I know it's a cost savings tactic that also speeds up training, but come on....
Training was actually fairly easy when I went through because you had someone you could talk to that would help put the material into context, and clarify difficult topics with their own experiences.

There are a bunch of "classes" to do on the iPad and make sure you know the stuff out of the 850+ page FOM.
What stuff? All the stuff? Some of the stuff?
Exactly.
You go home on Tuesday afternoon and come back Monday to take the test. Good luck!
Also, there is an inordinate amount of focus, effort, and time put into the 3585 (now 17347) stuff. It felt like we spent 3 days on that just for there to be only a few questions on the test about it.

Guys and gals, please don't take on this type of loser attitude, even if you see it coming from the left seat. Yes, a part of being an aviator is to maintain knowledge and skills that you don't use every day; yes, at the expense of some effort.
