Default Bend Oregon ideas?

Anyone live there? I'm helping plan a family reunion this summer and want the inside scoop on places to see and/or avoid, etc. Mix of ages.... newborn's to 70's.

We are staying in a few Sun River vacation homes.....

send me a PM

Cheers,

I don't have enough posts to PM (sorry), but Bend is a great place to spend some time in the summer.

For starters, it's the craft brewery capital of the northwest. (Though some Portlanders might beg to differ) Check out the 'Bend Ale Trail' ( The Bend Ale Trail ) if you think you might have time to hit a few. (I'm partial to 10Barrel Brewing, myself.) While you're on the brew-touring kick, stop by the Deschutes Brewery for a tour ( Free Brewery Tours | Deschutes Brewery ), which is pretty quick but includes free beer.

The Deschutes itself is a magnet for things to do in the summer. Opportunities for rafting, kayaking, paddleboarding, or even just floating are hard to miss. There are hundreds of great local trails for hiking/biking (many near the river), and your best bet would be to stop by a local outdoors store (REI, REI - Outdoor Gear, Equipment and Clothing for Spring Skiing, Snowboarding, Camping, Hiking, Fitness & More or my favorite local bike shop, Sunnyside Sports Bike, Cyclocross, Cross Country Ski | Sunnyside Sports Bend Oregon ) for advice on picking a trail or renting bikes if you didn't bring your own. Same goes for kayaks, paddleboards, and such.

Hope this gives you a start. Maybe there are more Bend lurkers like myself on here who will chime in...

You've gotta check out the Smith Rock area, very pretty. Also Mt Bachelor is one of the best ski mountains in the country, but you'll be there in summer, so they have other activities that time of year. If you're up for it, take a drive to Sisters, OR. It's a small town that's been turned into a tourist area; lots of old time shopping boutiques and small diners; ice cream parlors and trinkets. Wives, moms, and grandma's love places like Sisters, OR.
Also, possibly drive to Lake Billy Chinook. It's only 60 miles away, but takes 1:45 to get there because of the winding road to the lake. It's pretty cool, a big finger lake with really tall cliffs on every side. Good for camping, boating, house boats for rent, etc.

+1 on Smith Rock! If you climb, they have everything form 5.4 to 5.14. It's some of the best sport climbing the NW! If you don't climb, the park has lots of great trails for hiking or Mt. Biking....or watching rock climbers.
