DALPA MEC Elections
Disclaimer: Copied (with permission) from Pilots of Delta Twitter Feed
Last year, as part of its reforms to make internal elections more clear and open, the Delta MEC unanimously passed a resolution recommending that individuals running for officer positions declare such to the body at least 14 days prior to nominations. This justified change was instituted such that both the MEC, and the pilot membership which "owns" the institution, might have appropriate chance to weigh the candidates and their platforms.
Yesterday, November 22nd, marked two weeks before those nominations, to be made at the next MEC Regular Meeting in Los Angeles, December 7. As of that policy date, the following are publicly known to be so declared:
For MEC Master Chairman:
- John Malone
For MEC Vice Chairman:
- Ron Hay
For MEC Treasurer:
- Matt Geddie
- Tom Bell
For MEC Secretary:
- John Bryde
- Tom Tucker
- Tom Brielmann
(End of Copy)
As has been postulated in another thread here, there are speculatively "other" candidates for these positions.
As DALPA pilots, regardless of your political leaning or your DALPA feelings, I feel it is incumbent upon each pilot who cares to do 2 things:
1) Contact your LEC Reps and request that they encourage ANY candidate who intends to seek nomination for one of these offices to announce that candidacy immediately. The language passed by the MEC was specifically crafted to state "recommend" vs. "require", as to allow wiggle room for a candidate to wait until the last minute for possible political advantage, and it appears some prospective candidates may now be using that wiggle room. That is not the intent of this resolution, and we as line pilots should require that ALL candidates adhere to the intent of the resolution.
2) Once the full slate of candidates is made public, voice your own personal opinion as to who you believe you want to lead your MEC.
I am not making a political statement here about my choices, (although I reserve the right to do so later). I just believe that there should be transparency.
Understand that the voice we, as line pilots, have in this process is through our LEC Representatives. We do not vote on these positions, other than indirectly through our Reps. In order to compare candidates and voice our own opinions to our Reps, we must know who those candidates ARE, in advance. That was the intent of the MEC resolution, and I believe we should demand that all candidates adhere to that resolution.
It is not my intent to have a debate in this thread about one set of candidates vs. another. There is already a thread for that. My intent is to spur all pilots to demand transparency and to exercise their ability to voice their opinions to their Reps.

Excellent post Bandit.
Let's just speak plainly here.
Is Bill Bartels trying to get elected Master Chairman or not?
I think I might be able to support the guy and ask my reps to do the same, but I wish he would at least introduce himself to the Delta pilots and tell us briefly why he wants the job and what he hopes to accomplish.
The position is too important for this election process to all be happening in secret.
When it comes to choosing our Chairman, I think the line pilots deserve some transparency.
No more being treated like mushrooms.

I've not spoken to Bill in numerous months, so I can't speak for him. I know he contended for that position during the last election.
I was not addressing Bill or any pilot specifically. I was just saying that we should all be aware of both the candidates and the process.

I see that David Nestor is trying again with Council 44. The gall of this guy...he helped give us the first terrible TA, and now he's running again? Does he think we all forgot? Back then, he didn't even take the time to reply to some members's emails. He is the one guy I'm sure I won't be voting for. Sorry if this isn't the right thread, but I don't see any other current ones on the elections right now.
