Absolutely. Outside of an attempted rolling thunder, it's also a good plan to gain more time off as they'll have to give you a few 30 hour breaks within your stretch of reserve days.

With 13 days off in a month, bid the first 9 off and the last 4 off. Try to start the roll in the first 9 days. If that doesn't work, you have the last 4 to still salvage something in the carry over at the end of the month. The following month, do the same thing. You end up with all 13 days off in a row, just not starting on the first day of the month...

Here's another thing I like.

Work the last 6 days of a month as a lineholder.

Have the first 3-4 maybe 5 days of the next month be reserve days. Automatically, the first day and a half is going to have to be blocked off for 30hr rest! That leaves 2-3 days of rsv, and by then some senior people may have taken GS#1 already.

Yes. Just did it this month to have time off with the kids.

I don't sit reserve but am contemplating trying it. Are these 30 hour scheduled rest breaks necessitated by continuous long call days, even if one is never used?

Yes you must have a long stretch of reserve days. You are on reserve and on call 24/7 so that creates the need for the 30 hours free of all duty in the previous 168 hours. The trick is CS can schedule whenever they want and I've heard some have even asked them to schedule on certain days with CS's blessing of course. The rest has to be scheduled or planned. Like any regular rotation if you're given a rotation with 30 plus hours on a layover that counts the same as them assigning you the rest.

I bid 8 days of reserve just for the fact that I'll get 30/168 somewhere in there. They can give it to you on a layover, but that's never happened to me. I've always been lucky to have it scheduled in base which allowed me to commute home and sit about 2 full days there. Also, be sure to put in a slip pref to be used only if needed to fly or shortcall for a late start rotation or short call, if you have any left. It doesn't always work, but it will sometimes save you from a 5 am uncommuteable short call if you have any left. If you're not a commuter, it shouldn't be an issue for you.

For junior guys attempting rolling thunder, does it make more sense to do 13 consecutive x days at the end of the month? Since everyone's reset for GS at the beginning of the new bid period, wouldn't it make a junior guy more likely to get a call at the end of the month since senior guys will probably get the call at the beginning?

The problem with that is if rolling thunder is working, you'll fly almost all your reserve days and put yourself in a flight/duty time issue at the end of the month. If it's green slip mania, you'll get GS 1 before anyone else gets GS 2. Still better to go early in the month. Your category needs to be really understaffed though.

no, the whole point of rolling thunder is to roll your PB days into your on call days.
