Does anyone have a lot of experience doing rolling thunder? Bid all your days off at the beginning of the month or bid a few reserve days then a block of days off? What's the technique?

Pick an understaffed category in the summer, like NY ER, or DTW 717, and find the senior guy who bids a reserve line. Then pull his month in icrew after the fact. Those guys are used to seeing 15 people stalking their schedules to learn the Jedi ways... In a nutshell, to get it rolling you need the first 4 days around the first weekend of the month off. GS are given out in seniority, so if you're junior, your best shot for the first GS will come on a weekend. Because in order to get your second the following week, anyone else in category looking for their first will get the call before you.

This is all "from what I understand" information. I have watched many others do it but I can't bring myself to risk it not working....

Good luck

You must be in a seriously understaffed category, and it helps to be senior. Start the month with 4 X days, and you need to get a GS over those days. If you don't get called those first 4 days, expect to fly every on call day, and the thunder never starts rolling. Oh, and if pilots from the other bases Out of Base WS, that comes just before your GS and you're screwed.

Why start with 4 X days?

Start with 13 X days in a row!

You GS on days off. X days. Perfect world you start out with a 4 day GS on those x days. Then you get 4 PB days to essentially convert your first Res days back to x days.

Repeat.

Thing is, while rolling thunder all the way through would rock, one or more GS with PB days is pretty nice too.

That's very risky though, which is why I'd recommend 13 consecutive X days for anyone that really thinks they can pull off rolling thunder. I did along with others, for months on end. But there are times when several days goes by and "the well is dry." With at least 8-10 days off to start a month, there ought to be a GS somewhere in there (if a category is ripe for this game).

That way, if a few days pass at the start and only a small amount of GS go to the most senior people, there's still a week to get one and get things rolling.

You don't need to stack all your reserve days. I did 5 GS in OCT and inadvertently 'rolled thunder', more by being in the right place at the right time. I didn't have more than 3-4 days off at a time, but luckily I was available for GS 2, 3, 4, 5 quickly. Just 1-2 PB days at a time is all you need if the category is short and you are close by.

Good luck. The month I did that, I had at least 10 guys peeping my schedule for my "mystery" ways of working the system. Just dumb luck. I live close by though and that is more important than anything.

Appears the ER is setting up well for this plan this summer in ATL/NYC.

We all know what opinions are like...........so here's mone!

With 13 days off in a month, bid the first 9 off and the last 4 off. Try to start the roll in the first 9 days. If that doesn't work, you have the last 4 to still salvage something in the carry over at the end of the month. The following month, do the same thing. You end up with all 13 days off in a row, just not starting on the first day of the month...

Can you do 13 X days in a row in a purely domestic category?
