Rolling Thunder
Does anyone have a lot of experience doing rolling thunder? Bid all your days off at the beginning of the month or bid a few reserve days then a block of days off? What's the technique?

This is all "from what I understand" information. I have watched many others do it but I can't bring myself to risk it not working....
Good luck

You must be in a seriously understaffed category, and it helps to be senior. Start the month with 4 X days, and you need to get a GS over those days. If you don't get called those first 4 days, expect to fly every on call day, and the thunder never starts rolling. Oh, and if pilots from the other bases Out of Base WS, that comes just before your GS and you're screwed.

Start with 13 X days in a row!

You GS on days off. X days. Perfect world you start out with a 4 day GS on those x days. Then you get 4 PB days to essentially convert your first Res days back to x days.
Repeat.
Thing is, while rolling thunder all the way through would rock, one or more GS with PB days is pretty nice too.

That way, if a few days pass at the start and only a small amount of GS go to the most senior people, there's still a week to get one and get things rolling.

You don't need to stack all your reserve days. I did 5 GS in OCT and inadvertently 'rolled thunder', more by being in the right place at the right time. I didn't have more than 3-4 days off at a time, but luckily I was available for GS 2, 3, 4, 5 quickly. Just 1-2 PB days at a time is all you need if the category is short and you are close by.
Good luck. The month I did that, I had at least 10 guys peeping my schedule for my "mystery" ways of working the system. Just dumb luck. I live close by though and that is more important than anything.

We all know what opinions are like...........so here's mone!
With 13 days off in a month, bid the first 9 off and the last 4 off. Try to start the roll in the first 9 days. If that doesn't work, you have the last 4 to still salvage something in the carry over at the end of the month. The following month, do the same thing. You end up with all 13 days off in a row, just not starting on the first day of the month...
