Well VNAV sucks and is there not anything next gen about it really. I will say when any of my alaska or sw buddies speak highly of that abortion I remind them they never have flown a 757. I am sorry to say it will be in my future again, accountants love that "Palin" bird....
Lip stick on a pig!
Just my opinion of course.

The 737 VNAV recomputes a 3 degree path after every restriction and doesn't revert to a "power path" like the 717 or 88. I love that. VSD is an amazing tool for situational awareness and terrain avoidance. The divert planning tools in the FMS are advanced. Lastly, the Collins Multiscan weather radar in the 900s are revolutionary.
I look forward to returning to that airplane. Unless I can hold the CSeries on the east coast

The problem is the 88 led you into a false reality of the automation on the 737 being good....it's not....at all......although it's better than the 88....it would be better if it had the feature the 757 has when you change the speed on vnav path it stays in path vs going to vnav speed like the 737 does.

The 73 does indeed revert to speed instead of path after opening up the window, but it still has floor protection so you really only have to worry about getting high which the MFD and/or the VSD should give you a big clue. All that is out the window when the flaps are out of zero and it stays in path even when with the window open.
Oh and how could I forget, the approach capability of the 737 avionics is my favorite part of the airplane. IAN turns any non precision approach into a precision approach and the Rnp capability of the airplane makes approaches like the Expressway Visual into LGA and River Visual into DCA almost effortless. Comes in real handy going into LGA at 2330 after two legging it from the Caribbean.
I see your point on the Multiscan but see that as a small negative. I kept it in auto 95% of time. Disagree on VSD. It's an incredible tool that has saved the day in a couple of high profile events.
