For someone who is most likely missing the big picture, can someone please explain the downside to virtual bases? From the sounds of it, it seems as it would be helpful for commuters, but I'm sure I am missing something. Don't take this the wrong way, I'm not advocating one way or the other, I am just genuinely curious as to what the downside would be.

The 88 will still operate from JFK and EWR, and most, if not all, of the 90s can still operate at LGA. I don't expect to see huge changes to the NYC 88 category.

This info is directly from one of the technical pilots working with Boeing on the FMS/GPS and .3nm RNP certifications that I recently flew with.
I would expect significant changes to the NY category over the next year or two before the upgrades are complete. Just my thoughts.
